To be conversant with the contemporary research and clinical literature within the chosen discipline, students will require an understanding of scientific methodology and the ability to critically analyse published research and where appropriate, transfer this to the clinical situation. Part of this training is the preparation and conduct of an approved research project within the chosen DClinDent discipline. Students should be capable of devising a small research project and bringing it through the development stages including ethics approval by an institutional ethics committee where required. The project is usually a part of an ongoing research theme within the School and should be devised and conducted in close association with the research supervisor/s within the same discipline. Accredited postgraduate training programs in Australia and New Zealand have the requirement for an integrated one year full-time equivalent research training within the chosen discipline. This is regulated by the Australian Dental Council and subsequently becomes a part of the requirements for registration as a specialist following graduation. Students will collect research data from the pilot study, conduct the analyses and report on the initial outcomes in the form of a progress report. The knowledge learned, skills developed and data collected during DENT8071 will be used in the completion of the research project and research report in DENT8072.

DENT8071 is a year-long course and will continue the research commenced in Year 1 of the program. In DENT8071 the research proposal prepared in Year 1 will be progressed with a number of activities, such as ethics approval, pilot study, data collection and analysis, and preparation and presentation of results (findings).

Self-directed learning will be required for example in biostatistics, epidemiology and other research related knowledge as needed for students’ individual disciplines and projects, supported by the research advisory team and other academic and research staff.

Course requirements

Assumed background

Formal enrolment in DENT8071 follows the completion of the Literature Review (DENT7911) and Research Protocol (DENT7912) in Year 1 of the DClinDent program, which is prepared in conjunction with the research advisory team.

DClinDent students can apply for credit transfer for research courses in Years 2 (DENT8071) and Year 3 (DENT8072) if they have completed a research higher degree (Masters and/or Doctorate) and/or have led and conducted research for non-degree purposes, in the last-5 years, but this MUST be in the clinical discipline of study.

For those who have been awarded a research higher degree an academic transcript, copy of the thesis report and publications emanating from this research must be submitted. Evidence of other relevant research conducted, and publications can also be submitted.

For those who have led and conducted research, details of the applicant’s contributions to the research and the publications must be submitted.

Should you consider that your past recent research activities (within last 5-years) are suitable for recognition of prior learning for an exemption to research activities (the DENT8071 and DENT8072 courses) in a DClinDent program an additional form will need to be submitted at the time of application to the program. Initial assessment of RPL will be by the School of Dentistry Research Committee and the appropriate Discipline Lead. Final consideration and decision on the RPL application will be by the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences.
