This course allows students to translate theory into practice. The planning, operation, management and evaluation of food service systems in a range of settings is a core practice area for dietetic professionals. This course will critically examine the processes involved in the efficient and safe provision of culturally appropriate food and nutrition services to a range of target populations and client groups. Students will gain skills in food safety, food service systems and management, menu planning, and nutrition standards and policies. A work integrated service-learning model is used for this course with a series of workshops which provide foundation knowledge from which students translate into practice in their placement.

Aims and outcomes
Students will learn about how to influence the food supply to improve the nutritional status of individuals and vulnerable populations The National Dietetians Australia competency standards covered in this course include:
1.1 Demonstrates safe practice
1.4.1 Applies organisational, business and management skills in the practice of nutrition and dietetics (effective time, workload and resource management)
1.4.2 Utilises suitable evaluation tools to review effectiveness of practice
1.4.3 Identifies and assesses risks, follows risk management protocols and develops basic risk management strategies for services
1.4.4 Utilises relevant technology and equipment efficiently, effectively and safely
1.5.3 Works respectfully with individuals, groups and/or populations from different cultures
2.3.1 Applies a highly developed knowledge of nutrition science, health and disease, food and food preparation methods to tailor recommendations to improve health of individuals, groups and/or populations

Task description
Students will be required to complete four online quizzes during the semester. Each quiz will consist of 10 multiple choice questions randomly selected from a pool of questions for each module. The quizzes can be completed at any time before the due date, however, once the quiz commences, students will have a maximum of 20 minutes to complete the quiz. Only one attempt at each quiz is allowed.

Task description
Placement Preparation and Progress includes two components:
1) Competency Assessment- Professional practice project supervisors will provide feedback on student progress at the end of week 2 (interim assessment) and week 5 (final assessment) based on the DA National Competency Standards.
2) Placement Plan and Feedback Action (Learning plan)- Students must complete this plan in preparation for placement. Due end of week 1.

Course grade description: A grade of 7 will be awarded to a student who: Achieves a cumulative percentage for all graded assessment of 85% - 100% and obtains a passing mark for the Competency Assessment and Learning Plan assessment item identified in the assessment summary. |
Additional course grading information
This course contains ‘must pass’ assessment items, specifically the Competency Assessment and Learning Plan.
Students must pass this assessment item to pass the course overall, i.e. even if your final percentage mark is 50% or higher, if the individual ‘must pass’ assessment item is not passed, a student cannot achieve a grade higher than a 3.
Final marks falling between whole percentages will be rounded to the nearest whole percentage. For example:ᅠ84.5% and above will be rounded to 85% and 84.49% and below will be rounded down to 84%.
