This course is a practical exploration of stylistic, theoretical, and historical questions through rehearsal and performance of a live theatre event. Students will work practically across the semester in a work simulation to rehearse and perform a full production, under the leadership of an experienced director. This course will develop the skills required to present an independent theatre production, as well as acting and performance skills that can be applied elsewhere in the UQ Drama program and beyond.

This course aims to familiarise students with the production process of a live performance event, through participating in an on-campus performance.ᅠThe primary mode of study in this course is experiential; that is, students will be working practically on the rehearsal room floor throughout the semester. The course can therefore be understood as a 'work simulation': students are developing their experience in working in professional ways, with particular reference to independence theatre practice. In 2025 students will be working on a production of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Daniel Lammin, a contemporary adaptation of Lewis Carrol's Alice in Wonderland. Daniel Lammin will also be directing the production.

Timetable

The timetable for this course is available on the UQ Public Timetable.

Additional timetable information

Regular classes will be held throughout semester all day Friday and Saturday (10am to 5pm) — students who cannot make ALL day Friday and Saturday should not enrol in this course.

Attendance at all rehearsals, tech/dress runs, performances and debrief is compulsory. Students will need to organise work and other study to fit around this demanding schedule. This is a practicum course designed to instil professional ethics and practices in its participants. Absence will be heavily penalised. If you think you cannot commit to the timetable, it is best that you withdraw from the course now and make other study plans.

All rehearsals for the course, from Week 1 to Week 12, will be held in the Avalon Theatre from 10am-5pm on Fridays and Saturdays. There will be no rehearsals on public holidays, or during the mid-semester break. From time to time, an additional rehearsal may be called, with due consideration to existing commitments.

Students will also need to make arrangements with their work and other extracurricular commitments so they can be available from 5:00pm EVERY night of production week (Week 13).

Aims and outcomes

This course aims to familiarise students with the production process of a live performance event, through participating in an on-campus performance. Students will make an independent contribution to the performance event, both on- and off-stage, and collaborate with the cohort as a whole to realise all elements of performance and production. Ordinarily, this performance will be presented in the Geoffrey Rush Drama Studio, however from time to time a venue more appropriate to the form of the performance event will be selected. Students may also collaborate with industry professionals as directors and mentors as appropriate. As well as completing research into the critical and theoretical context of the performance event, students will learn the practical skills normally associated with live performance, including acting, design elements, publicity, marketing, event management, publicity, fundraising, stage management, and directing.ᅠ

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

LO1.

Demonstrate an ability to work with a group to achieve a joint performance project

LO2.

Demonstrate experience with specific skills relating to live performance and production work

LO3.

Make an independent contribution to a live performance event

LO4.

Task description

Students must attend all timetabled sessions from Weeks 1 to 12 inclusive, and engage with the rehearsal process accordingly. The learning environment for this course is rehearsal-based, which means that Rehearsals are the backbone of DRAM2200. In order to provide you with employable, transferrable skills, these Rehearsals will mimic a professional production process, which will require you to engage with them in specific ways. The Director and the Course Coordinator are responsible for setting the culture of the rehearsal room; it is your task to maintain that culture.

Please note, recording of this assessment item has been waived.

In line with the Assessment Procedures, written notes on the delivery and execution of production work will be used for assessment purposes.

This assessment task is to be completed in-person. The use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT) tools will not be permitted. Any attempted use of AI or MT may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Task description

As well as having to take on a production role, students are expected to take on a performance role in the play.

If students do not wish to perform, they may negotiate a larger production role with the director (as Assistant Director, or Stage or Production Manager, for example). In this case, the 30% performance grade transfers to how effectively students execute this production role during performance.

In line with UQ assessment procedures, performances are recorded.

Recording of Oral and Practical Assessment

  • All presentations will be recorded for marking purposes via recording facilities available where the assessment takes place (eg. ECHO360, Zoom, camera device).
  • Recordings will be retained by the School of Communication and Arts for at least 12 months from the release of the final grade for the course.
  • Recordings will be stored in a secure manner and will only be accessed by authorised school staff for the purposes of:
  • Moderation of marking;
  • Provision of feedback to the student(s) recorded; and/or
  • Re-marking following a successful re-mark application.

This assessment task is to be completed in-person. The use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT) tools will not be permitted. Any attempted use of AI or MT may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
