Introduces students to issues related to globalisation and economic development in less developed countries.

ECON2560 is an undergraduate course that deals with the economics of globalization and development, particularly emphasizing the problems facing the developing world. The course focuses on:

  • The nature and meaning of development and underdevelopment, and its various manifestations in less developed nations,ᅠa global outlook on economic development, and a conceptual framework to analyze it.
  • Key domestic problems and policies including poverty, inequality, population, migration, urbanization, and the environment.
  • A multidisciplinary perspective on some aspects of development to broaden the discussion.

The tutorial materials and tutorial solutions will be posted on Blackboard at the end of each week.

Assumed background

Working knowledge of basic Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Statistics - should have taken a basic course in Macroeconomics, Microeconomics and Statistics.

You'll need to complete the following courses before enrolling in this one:

Important Dates:

  • Public Holidays: Wed 13 August (Royal Queensland Show Holiday), Mon 6 October (King’s Birthday public holiday).
  • Mid-Semester Break: 29 September – 3 October. Semester 2 classes recommence on Tue 7 October.

Aims and outcomes

ECON2560 aims to familiarise students with basic issues on economic development and globalization. It allows students to develop a solid knowledge of developing economies and their pressing issues.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

LO1.

Gain in-depth knowledge and understanding of the nature and meaning of development and underdevelopment, and its various manifestations in the developing world.

LO2.

Explain and analyze the impact of globalization on poverty, inequality, and growth in the developing world.

LO3.

Explain, analyze and evaluate how less developed countries have been affected by international trade and international financial flows.

LO4.

Analyse and evaluate the development policy-making process recognizing the relative roles of the market, state, and civil society & Community driven development.

LO5.

Develop critical, analytical, evaluative, and creative capabilities consistent with Bloom's revised taxonomy - learning outcomes compatible with deep learning.

Task description

Journal Article Review (JAR) Guidelines and Instructions

Word Limit:  1480 - 1520 words (excluding references in the list, in-text references, and section headings).

Review ONE Journal Article of Your Choice. The articles that you choose will need to have prior approval from the course coordinator by 5 pm (BRISBANE TIME (GMT+10 HOURS) on 1 September 2025 at the latest. JAR constitutes a critically important building block in learning outcomes for this course and complements other components of assessment in ECON2560, especially the Country Report. You are required to complete this task individually, not in a group. 

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Translation (MT) are emerging tools that may support students in completing this assessment task. Students may appropriately use AI and/or MT in completing this assessment task. Students must clearly reference any use of AI or MT in each instance.

A failure to reference generative AI or MT use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Submission guidelines

Submission via turn-it-in only in the course Blackboard by the due date. No other form of submission will be ACCEPTABLE and will be treated as a NON-SUBMISSION. Brisbane time (GMT +10 hours) must be followed.

Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

The maximum extension allowed is 28 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

Late submission

A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.

Country Paper: Guidelines and Instructions

Students are required to write a country paper of 3,000 words in length (a minimum of 2,975 words and a maximum of 3,025 words) excluding the abstract, tables, figures, and in-text and listed references, and section headings.
