Markets, market failures and externalities; economics of environmental pollution problems; economic measures for pollution control and environmental regulation. Environmental change, economic growth, natural resource depletion and population growth.
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to basic concepts and principles in environmental economics, and to demonstrate how these concepts can be used to provide insights into the design of policies which go some way towards addressing environmental problems at both local and global levels.

Task description
Students will work in groups to complete a Podcast Presentation, which consists of three milestones: group formation (5%) due in Week 4; podcast proposal (10%) due in Week 7; and the final podcast video submission (20%), due one hour before the allocated tutorial in Weeks 10, 11, or 12, depending on the chosen environmental issue topic (1, 2, or 3). The selected topic must be finalised during the first milestone (group formation) in Week 4, during the student’s allocated tutorial class with the tutor. Changes to the topic will not be permitted after this point. These nested assessment milestones are worth 35% in total and are designed to ensure students stay on track with the task requirements.
Groups of 4 or 5 students will be formed during the allocated tutorial class, and topics will be selected on a first come, first served basis. All team members must agree to present in the week that corresponds to their chosen topic.
Buddycheck will be used as part of this assessment.

This task has been designed to be challenging, authentic and complex. Whilst students may use AI and/or MT technologies, successful completion of assessment in this course will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance.
A failure to reference generative AI use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct. To pass this assessment, students will be required to demonstrate detailed comprehension of their written submission independent of AI tools.

Task description
The in-semester exam will assess students' understanding of analytical tools, environmental analysis, and environmental policy topics discussed in Lectures 1 to 8 and Tutorials 1 to 7. The exam will consist of calculation-based and short-answer questions and will be held in class during the lecture period in Week 9. The duration of the exam is 60 minutes.
This assessment task is to be completed in-person. The use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT) tools will not be permitted. Any attempted use of AI or MT may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Task description
Students are required to complete a take-home case study assignment. Students will have two weeks to complete the assignment. The assignment will be released at the end of Week 11.
The assignment will consist of a written report worth 30% and a reflection worth 5% for a total of 35% of your final grade.
The assignment must be submitted electronically through the Online Submission link in the Assessment section of the Course Blackboard site. Further details to be announced in Blackboard.
