This course introduces how to develop and maintain effective and inclusive learning environments in higher education programs. The course draws on contemporary theories of higher education pedagogy, taking an evidence-informed reflective approach to improving practice. Participants attend common workshops and engage in learning activities particular to their elective choice in other weeks. A detailed schedule for each elective stream will be made available on Blackboard.
Participants must have current teaching or course design responsibility. Current teaching or course design responsibility is defined as broader than course coordination. It is teaching practice that broadly includes any role supporting learning or curriculum development across formal, informal, and professional settings. This can range from lecturing, lab demonstrating, PhD supervision, and tutoring, to designing workshops, online modules, extracurricular programs, or learning resources like video materials or assessment guidance. It also includes mentoring, supervising placements, developing digital tools, and contributing to student engagement or professional learning, i.e. any activity that facilitates learning or enhances educational experiences.

Restricted to Graduate Certificate in University Teaching Practice students. This course has a maximum quota of 50. Applicants who meet the prerequisites will be given first preference, followed by ranking based on appointment classification and type, with priority given to continuing staff.

This course introduces strategies for developing and maintaining effective and inclusive learning environments in higher education programs. It aims to assist participants address contemporary challenges impacting university educators in Australia and internationally. The course draws on contemporary theories higher education pedagogy, taking an evidence informed reflective approach to improving practice. The course introduces a variety of digital media, universal design and accessibility principles, and strategies to evaluate the effectiveness of strategies adopted in practice. Participants will attend the common seminars and engage in the learning activities particular to their elective choice in other weeks.

The best way to enhance your teaching is to start with a solid plan. This task will help you to review your current practice, identify a strategic change you can make this semester to ehance your approaches and environments (A2) and to support and guide learners (A4). You will identify the supports you need to put in place to succeed.
You will complete a template:
• drawing together information you already have including your teaching philosophy and context,
• identifying people you need to work with and tasks you need to complete,
• strategically planning your change and the support you need to get there.
The template will be provided through Blackboard (Learn.UQ) and we will work through this template in workshop 1 identifying support available in this course and beyond to implement your enhancement plan.
Feedback on this task will be discussed in workshop 2.
AI permitted use: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Translation (MT) are emerging tools that may support students in completing this assessment task. Students may appropriately use AI and/or MT in completing this assessment task. Students must clearly acknowledge any use of AI or MT in each instance.
A failure to acknowledge generative AI or MT use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Pitch your change and get feedback through this presentation and viva. This task challenges you to refine your plan for how you will implement your change to 3-minute presentation. You will then engage in a 3-minute viva, responding to questions on rationale, methodology, and potential impact to securely demonstrate your work.
You may be completing this assessment before you implement your change, alongside your change or soon after your change.
A PowerPoint template will be provided to support your presentation on Blackboard (Learn.UQ). The presentations and vivas will be held on campus with two assessors and small group of your peers.
This oral presentation and viva is to be completed in-person. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT) tools will not be permitted in your presentation and viva. You may use AI to support your preparation.
The presentation will be held in one of the designated times in week 7 or 11.
You cannot defer or apply for an extension for this assessment.
An alternative time can be negotiated with the Course Coordinator in exceptional circumstances
A resubmission opportunity may be provided where submissions are marked as a Fail, any resubmission opportunities and conditions will be at the discretion of the Course Coordinator.

In this culminating task, you’ll develop a case of your practice and reflect on your professional learning journey through the TiP program. Drawing on your Enhancement Proposal, Change Presentation, and Peer Observation, you will demonstrate how your practice has evolved, grounded in the HEA Professional Standards Framework (PSF) and ready to use in your Annual Performance & Development (APD). This reflective task not only showcases your growth as an educator at UQ but also provides authenticated evidence of your effectiveness.
