Elective project for students enrolled in Master of Educational Studies. Project topics are confined to specialised research and teaching interests of permanent staff of the School of Education. Students must choose and approach a potential supervisor. Projects are negotiated with supervisors and typically take the form of literature reviews or small research projects. Students and supervisors together complete the Application to Undertake a Supervised Research Project Form located on the School website (Educational Studies - Postgraduate Coursework). Forms should be submitted two weeks prior to the enrolment due date for the chosen semester to the Administrative Officer. Subsequent for approval to undertake the project being received from the School of Education, students enrol in the course.
Students completing in one year commencing in semester 2 enrol in EDUC7710 in both semesters. Students completing in one semester enrol in EDUC7915. Students completing in one year commencing in semester 1 enrol in EDUC7700 in both semesters. Students are expected to maintain contact with their supervisor.
Projects provide an opportunity for students to conduct independent study on a topic of interest under the supervision of an academic from the School of Education.
The Application to Undertake a Supervised Research Project Form submitted by the student provides a synopsis of the project negotiated.
The project will be assessed by the supervisor in accordance with the attached criteria sheet. A process of re-submit is available for students who submit a project which fails toᅠsatisfyᅠthe basic requirements.

Course grading
Full criteria for each grade is available in the Assessment Procedure.
Grade | Description |
---|---|
1 (Low Fail) |
Absence of evidence of achievement of course learning outcomes. Course grade description: The student has not submitted the thesis. |
2 (Fail) |
Minimal evidence of achievement of course learning outcomes. Course grade description: The student has not completed the thesis satisfactorily. |
3 (Marginal Fail) |
Demonstrated evidence of developing achievement of course learning outcomes Course grade description: Falls short of satisfying all basic requirements for a Pass. |
4 (Pass) |
Demonstrated evidence of functional achievement of course learning outcomes. Course grade description: The student has written an adequate thesis. The literature review covers the area sparsely. The methodology is suitable to the research, but lacks clarity and consistency. The analysis of the findings is just adequate, with significant lapses in exhibiting the data. The discussion and conclusion follow logically, but lack any depth and understanding of the findings. The thesis is sporadically formatted and referenced, following the APA guidelines. |
5 (Credit) |
Demonstrated evidence of proficient achievement of course learning outcomes. Course grade description: The student has written an adequate thesis. The literature review includes the basic references in the area of study. The methodology is suitable to the research questions, but could have been made clearer. The analysis of the findings is satisfactory, but sometimes lacks the depth that would indicate a firmer grasp of the analysis. The discussion and conclusion follow logically, but do not provide a significant, in-depth discussion of the findings. The thesis is generally properly formatted and referenced, following the APA guidelines. |
6 (Distinction) |
Demonstrated evidence of advanced achievement of course learning outcomes. Course grade description: The student has written a clear and useful thesis. The literature review has covered the area of study with up to date references. The methodology has been explained carefully and clearly and is designed to answer the research questions. The analysis is thorough and well written. The discussion is clear and highlights the issues found in the research. The conclusions are appropriate to the research findings. The thesis is properly formatted and referenced, following the APA guidelines. |
7 (High Distinction) |
Demonstrated evidence of exceptional achievement of course learning outcomes. Course grade description: The student has written an outstanding thesis. The literature review has covered the area of study thoroughly with up to date and seminal references. The methodology has been explained carefully and clearly, and has been designed well to answer the research questions. The analysis has been done clearly and cogently. The discussion has been written with flair and thoroughly explains the research findings. Thoughtful and useful conclusions have been drawn. The thesis is properly formatted and referenced, following the APA guidelines. |
Additional course grading information
Determining final grades: The final grades are determined by consideration of the weighting of individual assessment items, through the use of weighting formula and the profile of individual grades across accumulated assessment tasks.
Anᅠexemplarᅠto show calculation of the final grade:
All twoᅠassignments in this course will be provided a grade out of 7. The final grade will be calculated using the weighting and the individual assignment grades as follows.
Example:
A student receives the following three grades
Assignmentᅠ 1 (A1) : grade of 6 at 30% weighting
Assignment 2 (A2): grade of 5.5 at 70% weighting
The final grade for this student taking into account the weighting of each assignment would be:
ᅠᅠᅠ (A1)ᅠᅠᅠᅠ +ᅠᅠᅠᅠᅠᅠ (A2)
ᅠ
(0.30ᅠx 6) + (0.70ᅠx 5.5) = 1.8 +ᅠ 3.85ᅠ=ᅠ5.65
The final grade would be rounded up to the nearest whole number; in this case the grade would beᅠ6.
In the case where the final grade is a half grade (i.e. 5.5) or close to a half grade (5.65), the grade will be rounded up or down to the nearest whole number.ᅠ
Supplementary assessment
Supplementary assessment is available for this course.
Additional assessment information
The following applies to all assessments in this course:
Marking criteria and/or marking rubrics are available in the 'Assessment' folder in Blackboard for this course.
Release of assessment item marks and feedback
In addition to the grade awarded, feedback will be provided in a timely manner to enable students to apply the feedback to further tasks within the course or program and/or plan for supplementary assessment, requests for re-mark, or re-enrolment. However, as per UQ Policy and Procedures Library under the Assessment Policy, results for the final assessment item are to be released only after the final grade for the course has been released. Time frames for applications for assessment re-mark are indicated under the Assessment Procedure.
Re-mark policy
After each assessable item, students will be given the opportunity to view their assessment and so satisfy themselves that a marking or administrative error has not occurred. The formal process of querying a course result (requesting a remark on academic grounds) is set out in the UQ Policy and Procedures Library under the Assessment Procedure.
Use of generative AI to support or inform assessment
These tasks have been designed to be challenging, authentic and complex. Whilst students may use AI technologies, successful completion of assessment in this course will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance.
A failure to reference AI use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
To pass this assessment, students will be required to demonstrate detailed comprehension of their written submission independent of AI tools.
