Elective project for students enrolled in Master of Educational Studies. Project topics are confined to specialised research and teaching interests of permanent staff of the School of Education. Students must choose and approach a potential supervisor. Projects are negotiated with supervisors and typically take the form of literature reviews or small research projects. Students and supervisors together complete the Application to Undertake a Supervised Research Project Form located on the School website (Educational Studies - Postgraduate Coursework). Forms should be submitted two weeks prior to the enrolment due date for the chosen semester to the Administrative Officer. Subsequent for approval to undertake the project being received from the School of Education, students enrol in the course. Students completing a project in one semester enrol in EDUC7910. Students completing a project over one year commencing in semester 1 enrol in EDUC7700 in both semesters. Students completing a project over one year commencing in semester 2 enrol in EDUC7710 in both semesters. Students are expected to maintain contact with their supervisor.

Projects provide an opportunity for students to conduct independent study on a topic of interest under the supervision of an academic from the School of Education. Students who wish to complete a project must negotiate their topic and project requirements with their supervisor. An Application to Undertake a Supervised Research Project Form contains a synopsis of the project and must be completed and submitted two weeks prior to the enrolment due date for the chosen semester. The Application to Undertake a Supervised Research Project Form submitted by the student provides a synopsis of the project negotiated.

The project will be assessed by your supervisor and one other marker.

Task description

Task 1: Individual Project Plan (Abstract, annotated bibliography, timeline)(Total words for Task 1 = 1000 words)


a) Write an abstract that provides a rationale for your project. (100-150 words)

b) Prepare an annotated bibliography containing at least 8 references that you will use during your project (approximately 100 words per reference in which you provide a short summary and critique of the topic in the reference)

c) Prepare a project timeline that outlines the tasks you will complete to ensure the timely submission of your project. These tasks will be negotiated with your supervisor.

Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

Task description

Task 2: Project: This task is the write up of the completed project. Students are expected to keep in contact with their supervisor to ensure that this task is of enough depth and scope to meet the requirements expected of a review of the literature or a report on a study that the student has implemented. Submit your completed project, including title page, table of contents, written project, reference list and any appendices. (10,000 words)


NB: The Criteria Sheet used for marking your project will depend on the nature of your project. If your project is literature based, then the Literature Review Criteria Sheet will be used. If you conduct a research project then the Criteria Sheet for Research Projects will be used.

In the case where the final grade is 0.5 or above, the grade will be rounded up to the nearest whole number (e.g. 5.5 would become 6). In the case where the final grade is 0.49 or below, the grade will be rounded down to the nearest whole number (e.g. 6.49 would become 6).

Release of assessment item marks and feedback

In addition to the grade awarded, feedback will be provided in a timely manner to enable students to apply the feedback to further tasks within the course or program and/or plan for supplementary assessment, requests for re-mark, or re-enrolment. However, as per UQ Policy and Procedures Library under the Assessment Policy, results for the final assessment item are to be released only after the final grade for the course has been released. Time frames for applications for assessment re-mark are indicated under the Assessment Procedure.


Re-mark policy
