A major investigation or research project or a significant design task in industry, UQ or another university/research institute that integrates factors encountered in real life industry or research projects.
Please note: This course falls outside the regular semester dates. Students are required to undertake a placement of up to 24 weeks in duration between July to December for semester 2.
This course is restricted to BE(Hons)/ME students in the Fields of Chemical, Chemical and Bioprocess, Chemical and Biomedical, Chemical and Environmental, Chemical and Materials, Chemical Metallurgical, Civil, Civil and Environmental, Mechanical and Materials Engineering and ME Urban Water Engineering (Professional) students.
Students need to contact EAIT Employability (employability@eait.uq.edu.au) to make arrangements for suitable placements in the semester prior to their required placement semester.

A major investigation or research project or a significant design task:

  1. In industry that integrates technical, commercial and other factors, or;
  2. Within a university or research organisation (UQ or at another approved institution in Australia or overseas).

This will include an assessment of the risk associated with the project including the conduct of the project. Projects must be approved prior to enrolment. This course is available only to students undertaking the integrated Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Engineering (BE(Hons)/ME) program.

Extended Semester & Graduation Implications:ᅠ

ENGG7292ᅠ has an extended semester running from early July to mid-December. The Final Report and Presentation are due in December, after the date when Semester 2 grades are normally finalised. So, ENGG7292 students are awarded an INC grade in the first instance, and the final grade is uploaded after the Final Report and Presentation ᅠhave been marked, normally at the end of January the following year.

We encourage students to follow the recommended study plan and undertake ENGG7292 in the appropriate semester for their program. If a student doesᅠ enrol in ENGG7292 in their final semester, their graduation will be delayed until the end of Semester 1, the following year.

If the project does result in the creation of IP, students other than HDR candidates will be treated as HDR candidates per the Intellectual Property Procedures.ᅠ

Prior to commencement of the project, check with your industry supervisor(s) to see if there will be any confidentiality requirements for the thesis. Note that academics not involved in the project will examine the thesis and this needs to be recognised and acknowledged by the research partner. Unless an agreement is in place otherwise, theses may also be posted in an online University repository.ᅠ

This course will assist your transition to becoming a responsible professional or research engineer through conducting a complete engineering project in which you integrate engineering skills acquired throughout your engineering program.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

Task description

The Project Proposal should outline the aims and scope of the project, the deliverables of the project, and the risks to successful completion of the project.

A possible structure of the Project Proposal is:

  1. Title and supervisory team structure
  2. Introduction - briefly outline the background to the project and establish the context in which the proposed research is to be undertaken
  3. Goals - clearly identify the aim(s) of the project; this may be in the form of one or two major goals and sub-goals
  4. Methodology - identify the proposed steps that will be undertaken to complete the project
  5. Deliverables - if everything went according to the proposed plan, identify the expected deliverables from the project. 
  6. Risks - identify the risks to successful completion of the project
  7. References - list the papers/reports referenced in the Proposal. A bibliography may also be included (relevant papers/reports not referenced in the text).

The expected length of the Project Proposal is 10-15 pages. Writing in a clear, concise form is an important professional skill.

Task description

A combined Workplace Feedback Form and Student Reflection are to be completed at two points during the placement - mid-placement and end of placement.

This assessment will model a workplace performance review and will allow for direct oral feedback between the student and the workplace supervisor. 

This provides an opportunity to reflect on your development since the start of the placement and to write a reflective report.

Students should provide the feedback form to their supervisors at least two weeks prior to submission due date, and to schedule a meeting to discuss with their workplace supervisor at least a week before the due date.

More details on the submission will be available on Blackboard.

This task has been designed to be challenging, authentic and complex. Whilst students may use AI and/or MT technologies, successful completion of assessment in this course will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance.

A failure to reference generative AI or MT use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

To pass this assessment, students will be required to demonstrate detailed comprehension of their written submission independent of AI and MT tools.

Task description

The objective of this assessment is to evaluate your progress and ensure you are on track to meet the project's final deliverables. It also provides an opportunity for your supervisory team to give feedback and for you to reflect on it while discussing a plan moving forward.

This assessment item consists of two components as outlined below:

1.     Progress Presentation

You will need to organise a one-hour meeting with your supervisory team within the dates outlined in the electronic course instance and deliver a 30-minute presentation outlining progress on your project. The presentation should include the following components:

  • Project background and objectives.
  • Summary of methodology.
  • Preliminary results, analysis and challenges.
  • Timeline and plans for remaining tasks.

In this presentation, you will highlight the milestones achieved so far, identify any challenges or hurdles encountered, and discuss strategies to address them. Additionally, you will justify any changes made to the project plan, if applicable. Following the presentation, the supervisory team will provide feedback on progress, offering suggestions for improvement, as well as guidance for the successful completion of the project and final report.

2.     Evidence of final report drafting process

During this meeting you will also need to demonstrate that you have begun writing your final report with evidence of a draft of the initial chapters or sections of your report, this may include but not limited to an introductory chapter, where the research problem, objectives, and significance are introduced, and a review or technical background or prior art where applicable.

It is recommended to submit this draft report to supervisors prior to the meeting to give them sufficient time to review (e.g. 1 week) and provide some feedback during the meeting. Please discuss with your supervisors when they wish to receive the draft.


Submission requirements:

You are required to submit a single PDF document with your name and student number by the due date specified in the course instance that includes the following:

  • A copy of your presentation
  • A summary of feedback provided by the supervisory team with a short reflection on the feedback and how this will inform your actions moving forward
  • A draft structure of your final report

Task description

Students are expected to attend and participate in BEME Placement Symposium for two sessions (approx. 3 hours). This provide an opportunity for students to develop their communication skills, but also to learn from others and think critically.

Students are requested to present a non-confidential presentation of their work and participate in the symposium by actively listening and asking critical questions of their peers.

Students may be requested to contribute to the assessment of other students' presentations - this should be done professionally and meaningfully.

Students may need to adapt their work so it is suitable to present to a public audience, and should only present results from their thesis that their industry advisors have permitted.

Students are expected to present their work to peers, academic staff members, and placement supervisors on campus. Online presentations may be possible if travelling to campus is not possible. Students should discuss and review content of presentations in order to avoid disclosing confidential information.

Aim for a talk that is no more than 11-12 minutes long (e.g. 12 slides), which will allow three minutes for questions in the 15-minute slot. It is important that you ensure that your slides are available prior to your session. The chair may interrupt a student's presentations at the 12 minute mark so there is time for questions.

A suggested format for the presentation is as follows:

  • Title Slide
  • Introduction: Context and Aim of Placement
  • Technical Background: Review of the Literature and or State-of-the-Art
  • Project Methodology and Management: Technical Approach, Resources, Scope, Methods.
  • Discussion of Project Outcomes and Results

Additional notes:

This task is about communication of research and project work to a broader audience, which is independent of the assessment on the report. Students are encouraged to develop and present a "public-facing" version of their work (i.e. non-confidential components) and to obtain approval from their workplace supervisor. They should discuss this with their supervisor well in advance of presentation day to determine what aspects can be presented publicly. All presentations should be reviewed by workplace supervisor prior to presenting to ensure no confidential information is presented. In most circumstances, it is anticipated that presentations can be adequately adjusted to allow presentation publicly although it may mean a student can't present everything they have done.

If a student has been unable to remove confidential information to the satisfaction of their workplace supervisor, they may contact the coordinator explaining the situation and request permission to present to a select set of academic staff and workplace members only. This should be done well in advance of the scheduling process for presentations. The coordinator may seek further information from the workplace and/or academic supervisor. Students are still required to attend the symposium.

Task description

At the conclusion of the placement the student will submit a Final Report or thesis documenting the progress and outcomes of the investigation. This report should serve as a reference document for UQ and for the placement hosts. Details on formatting and submission will be available on Blackboard. 

Early Submission: If you are currently taking ENGG7292 and this is your final semester, there is currently no provision for the early submission of assessment before the end of academic semester in October.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Translation tools: This task has been designed to be challenging, authentic and complex. Whilst students may use AI and/or MT technologies to a limited extent, successful completion of assessment in this course will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance. The body of the report should not need to exceed 50 pages (excluding appendices).

7 (High Distinction) 85 - 100

Demonstrated evidence of exceptional achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: Demonstrates outstanding ability in applying engineering principles to a substantial engineering problem. The work presented in the final report is of a standard suitable for publication in a good professional journal. Student submits ᅠall written assessments and participates ᅠin the oral presentation. Total course marks typically 85%-100%.

Student Presentations

Pre-placement Modules

These online modules should be completed before starting placement. They are designed to give students some professional skills and course knowledge in preparation for the upcoming industry/research placement. It will be supported during the semester with an online workshop to highlight essentials and ask questions with course coordinator.
