This course provides an introduction to world energy markets, energy policy and how governments regulate and intervene in these systems. Its context is the rapid transformation that is underway and the key drivers for this. Students will gain an understanding of how various energy markets have changed over recent times and what challenges they bring to energy policy development. Energy regulations, policies and agreements from a range of countries will be examined.
As the world transitions to sustainable energy, fundamental change is occurring in the complex and multi-layered systems of fuel, environment and power markets.ﾠ Key opportunities will be missed unless sustainable energy professionals have a strong understanding of how energy markets work.ﾠ This course presents key insights and frameworks on energy infrastructure, law and policy and how these influence energy markets and prices.ﾠ The course has a particular focus on Australia's National Electricity Market, but learnings will be applied across global energy systems.

This course is taught in Intensive mode.ﾠ Students are advised to check the Learning Activities section for the course timetable.ﾠ In particular, attendance and participation (online or on campus) is required at the Intensive Modules across two consecutive days (9am-5pm) and five weekly workshops (three-hours).
Aims and outcomes
This course provides an overview of energy markets and the roles of economics, law, policy and infrastructure in its development. This course will help you understand the functioning of energy markets as a necessary step in the transition to increased sustainable energy. Using Australia's National Electricity Market as an example, you will obtain a deeper understanding of its principles and effectiveness. This will provide the skills and knowledge to ﾠbe able to promote the investments necessary for achieving the energy transition.

Task description
Students will complete an online quiz; questions will be based on the videos, readings and activities undertaken in the Foundation Modules (self-directed learning).
Quiz is open book and non-invigilated.

Task description
Recorded media presentation: Short role-play presentations in groups.
This assessment includes submission of a media statement and memorandum. Students put forward an organisational response to an energy policy announcement.
This task has been designed to be challenging, authentic and complex. Whilst students may use AI and/or MT technologies, successful completion of assessment in this course will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance.
A failure to reference generative AI or MT use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
To pass this assessment, students will be required to demonstrate detailed comprehension of their written submission independent of AI and MT tools.

Task description
Further information on the format and schedule of this examination will be provided in the Intensive Modules. This exam is a hurdle assessment; students must score >= 50% in this exam to pass the course.
This Identity-Verified Assessment task is to be completed in-person, via Zoom.
This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT). Students are advised that the use of AI or MT technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Additional course grading information
To pass the course, students ﾠmust obtain a mark of >= 50% for the Oral Exam individual assessment.
There is an opportunity for students to complete an online peer assessment of each group member for all group assessment items. However, if there is consensus that all group members participated equally this will not be necessary.ﾠ

Supplementary assessment may involve a written or oral exam. Where a mark of <50% for the Oral Exam resulted in a grade of 3, the Supplementary assessment may be offered via resitting the Oral Exam.
