Strategy is critical to successful businesses. This course examines contemporary business strategies and how organisations create and sustain competitive advantage and performance. Key areas of focus include innovation and entrepreneurship, organisational change, risk management, scenario planning, technology assessment, and management principles. Combining such a range of strategic planning tools and frameworks, it will equip students to understand the processes required for designing successful strategy, restructuring and gain an integrated perspective on innovation and entrepreneurship.
This course develops business management and strategic thinking skills in the areas of strategic analysis, formation, and implementation. The course also addresses strategic issues related to entrepreneurship and innovation in emerging areas of sustainable energy, by giving students the theoretical foundations they need to apply strategic thinking to solve real-life strategic and innovation challenges in sustainability.
The course prepares participants to lead and manage in an economic environment where competitive advantage is created primarilyᅠthrough innovation. The course involves discussions on the importance of strategy and innovation in the economy as well as more specific frameworks for strategic thinking and leading innovation at the business and corporate levels. Innovation in the transition to sustainable energy technologies and business models is examined as an integral part of business strategy for sustainable energy, in the face of uncertain futures.

Aims and outcomes
Entrepreneurship and Innovation are fundamental sources of competitive advantage for future-oriented sustainable energy businesses. The purpose of this course is to understand and analyse the importance and nature of strategic positioning and resourcing in the sustainable energy sector, and how managers can lead innovation to achieve sustained competitive advantage. Students will understand and apply robust analytical frameworks and contemporary empirical evidence to the cases of real-life businesses.

Task description
Students, in groups, will present their project proposals for an analysis of innovation strategies of a given organisation in the energy/sustainability sector. Please see Blackboard for further details.
Team Presentation Slides are to be submitted to Blackboard PRIOR to the presentation.
Peer Assessment is available: if a group member wishes to do a peer assessment of their group's work, they must notify the lecturer, who will then invite ALL group members to do it. This assessment will produce a Peer Assessment Factor (PAF) which will be multiplied by the total group mark for the assessment piece to form an individual mark.
