This is a four-unit course delivered over two semesters designed to provide students with an opportunity to undertake an in-depth detailed investigation on a specific topic of interest in sustainable development in order to develop a demonstrable degree of expertise in that topic. Students are provided an opportunity to demonstrate high level professional skills in report presentation, analysis of information and academic aptitude.
As a capstone course for the coursework option in the Bachelor of Environmental Management Honours, this course aims to integrate the key learning from previous courses into a coherent skills set and repertoire of methodologies that are suited to the work environment. In order to make the learning outcomes most relevant and useful, the course is about applying your skills to real-world issues, and developing skills and personal attributes that are valued highly by employers. It provides experience in working in groups and exposure to the practical and interpersonal problems of focusing efforts towards a common goal. Accordingly, there is considerable emphasis on personal and professional communication skills but this is within the context of solving, or evaluating the solution to a complex problem, through the use of the appropriate tools and approaches. In this way, the course seeks to provide you with integrative experience in addressing issues that are made particularly problematic because of their human dimensions but which have their own inherent complexity.
The course involves an integrative case study on a contemporary problem or issue facing environmental managers. The assessment and problem solving activities are conducted on behalf of an external client or ‘industry mentor’, who you will liaise with throughout the year. Many of these clients are typical of government, community-based and industry bodies involved in your potential future fields of employment. The course thus provides opportunity to familiarize with these sectors, and to attract positive attention.
Some past students have gained employment with these or related bodies. The course recognises that complex management problems typically involve managers from a range of disciplinary backgrounds and interests, and that professional scientists and managers require skills to contribute to multidisciplinary problems. For this reason, we require both internal and external students to work in groups.
Emphasis is placed on defining the problem or issue your client has presented, clarifying the interests and expectations of stakeholders, establishing an appropriate integrative approach, applying methods and analysis, defending conclusions and providing your client with a useful, professionally presented product.
Case studies will be chosen to reflect the range of interests of the students involved in the courses. While an individual staff mentor will be nominated to work with each group, there will be a rich opportunity to interact with students and staff from other areas of disciplinary interest, and your external client.
This course provides students with the opportunity to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team on a challenging and relevant project. Students considering careers in the public or private sectors will be able to use their participation and the skills they develop in this course as specific evidence of project development and management skills, teamwork and communication skills and experience in client dialogue.
Learning Focus
This course provides a mentored experience of using problem-solving and analytical thinking skills, disciplinary knowledge, and teamwork and communication skills as a means of developing your professional capacities. The course integrates new skills with skills learnt in previous study or in the workplace at an advanced (final year) level in the context of contemporary issues with which you, as professionals entering the workforce, should be familiar.

Task description
This individual assignment is intended to get you thinking creatively and broadly about your client’s case study topic and assist you in understanding the issues and the context from their perspective. In doing so, and based on some preliminary research, you are trying to map out some initial ideas on what the problems and challenges may be for the client.
Importantly, we have made this an individual assignment so that each team member can feel free to express their view of the issues independently (ie. Avoiding too much early group think). By doing this early in the semester you will have a much richer and diverse set of insights into what the problems are and how the team may develop the project brief that is to be submitted later in a few weeks. We recognise this is early in the semester, but it is also an exercise in rapidly acquiring a well-developed appreciation for your client’s situation and how you may proceed in developing a project.
You will notice that often the client has a general sense of an issue that needs resolution, but not have the time or resources to adequately define or analyse the problem in sufficient detail to start to develop appropriate solutions. For this reason, this early piece of assessment gives you an opportunity to draw on all your skills and knowledge (along some additional research) to creatively articulate what you think the key components of the problem are that need to be addressed or resolved.
Each student in the team will write a short account (approximately 600 words maximum) that contains:
- The context and drivers for the issue(s)
- A clear statement of the problem(s), and
- Some suggested options in brief of how the project may be approach by the team (i.e., what methods, approaches or tools may be used) with a very brief justification
The outcomes of this early work will then provide a platform for the team to share and discuss how to combine insights from the team in developing the final Project Brief (assignment 2).
Submission guidelines
Submit via Turnitin via the ENVM4400 blackboard site.
Deferral or extension
You may be able to apply for an extension.
The maximum extension allowed is 28 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.
See the Additional assessment information section further below for information relating to extension and deferral applications.
Late submission
A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.
10% loss per day late.
You are required to submit assessable items on time. If you fail to meet the submission deadline for any assessment item, then 10% of the maximum possible mark for the assessment item (assessment ‘marked from’ value) will be deducted as a late penalty for every day (or part day) late after the due date. For example, if you submit your assignment 1 hour late, you will be penalised 10%; if your assignment is 24.5 hours late, you will be penalised 20% (because it is late by one 24-hour period plus part of another 24-hour period).

Task description
The brief is intended to demonstrate that you understand the client’s problem, and that you (based on your knowledge, skills, and research capacity) are able to come up with a satisfactory product that will meet their needs. The brief can take many forms and several will be shown in the course as examples. You should be aiming for document that is as concise as possible but still manages to convince the client that you are on top of the issues, the literature, relevant methods/practices, and that you can deliver a quality final product.
Aims:
The purpose of the project brief is to familiarise students with the process of developing and submitting a clear and concise, yet compelling project proposal that would attract funding or support within and organisation, government agency or other funding body. On completion of the brief students should be able to:
- Undertake a rapid appraisal of a client’s issue or problem based on reviewing literature, other information, and any client interactions,
- Articulate the aims of a project that will address the issue or problem identified,
- Provide detailed and well justified a method or work plan that will deliver an appropriate solution for the issue(s) identified,
- Identify all relevant resources required to execute the project,
- Evaluate risks that may impact on completion of the project, and identify strategies to diminish those risks, and
- Work as a team to produce document the meets or exceeds expectations at a professional industry standard.

Task description
Task Description:
Aims:
The purpose of the literature review is to ensure that the group members have an up to date knowledge of the relevant literature (both peer reviewed and grey literature) that will inform the development of the brief and the execution of the project. The literature review should be a comprehensive and cover broader theories, methods and concepts of the disciplines relevant to the project. On completion of the Brief students should be able to:
- Search for and identify the available literature relevant to your case study project
- Engage critically with the body of knowledge
- Synthesise the body of knowledge,
- Communicate how the literature supports and informs the development and execution of your case studies project, and
- Work as a team to allocate tasks and bring together various literature into one coherent and compelling document
Expectations:
Your literature review should be presented in a way that indicates a high level of professionalism, and for this reason I do not wish to prescribe any specific format as this will affect creativity and flair. However, as a minimum standard, your literature review should be not more than 4,000 words (between 3,500 and 4,000 is ideal). The document should be very clearly structured and presented, they should have a very clear aim (or aims) and a focus that holds the entire document together. In addition, your review should have a strong and well justified conclusion that links to and justifies your approach to the case study project. Formatting, editorial and proof reading really counts, so be sure that these tasks are also addressed when allocating members of the group to tasks.

Task description
Formative but compulsory
Task Description:
The first semester peer assessment is intended as a formative exercise (ie. does not contribute directly to a score or marks) to help groups solve any issues and identify strengths and weaknesses before semester 1 finishes. The results will not be used for marking, but will be used in evaluating results from semester 2 peer review. The Peer review will be undertaken within Blackboard and will require students to rate themselves and the other members of their group against criteria using a Likert scale.
Feedback will be given to groups (and individuals if necessary) and the peer assessment will be used to identify any opportunities to improve group performance. Please note: Group Peer Assessment is not intended as a punitive tool. Please be honest and constructive, so it can assist in the production of an excellent final report for your client. If the process identifies significant problems the course staff will use this as an opportunity to offer support or guidance if any individual is facing significant challenges.
Brief comments will be required to justify your ratings. Please follow all normal levels of professionalism and student conduct when undertaking your peer assessments
The Group Peer Assessment in semesters 1 and 2 is compulsory, and failure to complete this will result in zero for this part of the course.
Hurdle requirements

Task Description:
Aims:
The oral presentation is your chance to case the quality of your work, and how valuable your outcomes are for the client.
The aim of the presentation is to:
- Evaluate how well your group can convey the outcomes of their project for the client and how they meet the client’s needs,
- Demonstrate the highest standard of oral presentation, and
- Demonstrate passion and enthusiasm for the “product” or outcomes of the project
Presentation time for each group will be 15 minutes maximum, and it is strongly recommended that you allow 5 minutes for comments and questions. Thus you should aim to deliver a high quality oral and visual presentation that is not more than 10 minutes. We will try to ensure that presentations are all undertaken in the contact time for ENVM4400. But given the ECP is written before semester one begins we have no control over timetable in semester 2. In addition availability of the client will also determine when we can hold the presentations. The intention will be to have them all in week 10.

Plagiarism warning and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Software
DO NOT copy and paste material from the internet!ᅠDo not borrow, use, purchaseᅠor steal material or assignmentsᅠfrom previous students or current students! You may copy small passages of text provided they are clearly referenced and enclosed in quotation marks.ᅠThese passages must not form a significant proportion of the assessment.ᅠI rigorously check any assignment that I consider has taken passages from the internet or that has plagiarised from any source including previous years’ assessment or another student’s work. Assignments will be checked for plagiarism using the latest technology and software (for example 'Turn It In' linked to Blackboard submissions).
Assessment tasks in ENVM4400 evaluate students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
Turnitin
By submitting work through Turnitin you are deemed to have accepted the following declaration “I certify that this assignment is my own work and has not been submitted, either previously or concurrently, in whole or in part, to this University or any other educational institution, for marking or assessment”.
All students must ensure they receive their Turnitin receipt on submission of any assessments. A valid Turnitin receipt will be the only evidence accepted if assessments are missing. Without evidence, the assessment will receive the standard late penalty, or after five days, will receive zero.
In the case of a Blackboard outage, please contact the Course Coordinator as soon as possible to confirm the outage with ITS.
Applications for Extensions to Assessment Due Dates
Extension requests are submitted online via my.UQ – applying for an extension. Extension requests received in any other way will not be approved. Additional details associated with extension requests, including acceptable and unacceptable reasons, may be found at my.UQ.
Please note:
- Requests for an extension to an assessment due date must be submitted through your my.UQ portal and you must provide documentation of your circumstances, as soon as it becomes evident that an extension is needed. Your application must be submitted on or before the assessment item's due date and time.
- Applications for extension can take time to be processed so you should continue to work on your assessment item while awaiting a decision. We recommend that you submit any completed work by the due date, and this will be marked if your application is not approved. Should your application be approved, then you will be able to resubmit by the agreed revised due date.
- If an extension is approved, you will be notified via your my.UQ portal and the new date and time for submission provided. It is important that you check the revised date as it may differ from the date that you requested.
- If the basis of the application is a medical condition, applications should be accompanied by a medical certificate dated prior to the assignment due date. If you are unable to provide documentation to support your application by the due date and time you must still submit your application on time and attach a written statement (Word document) outlining why you cannot provide the documentation. You must then upload the documentation to the portal within 24 hours.
- If an extension is being sought on the basis of exceptional circumstances, it must be accompanied by supporting documentation (eg. Statutory declaration).
- For extensions based on a SAP you may be granted a maximum of 7 days (if no earlier maximum timeframe applies). See the Extension or Deferral availability section of each assessment for timeframes. Your SAP is all that is required as documentation to support your application. However, additional extension requests for the assessment item will require the submission of additional supporting documentation e.g., a medical certificate. All extension requests must be received by the assessment due date and time.
- An extension for an assessment item due within the teaching period in which the course is offered, must not exceed four weeks in total. If you are incapacitated for a period exceeding four weeks of the teaching period, you are advised to apply for Removal of Course.
- If you have been ill or unable to attend class for more than 4 weeks, you are advised to carefully consider whether you are capable of successfully completing your courses this semester. You might be eligible to withdraw without academic penalty - seek advice from the Faculty that administers your program.
- Students may be asked to submit evidence of work completed to date. Lack of adequate progress on your assessment item may result in an extension being denied.
- There are no provisions for exemption from an assessment item within UQ rules. If you are unable to submit an assessment piece then, under special circumstances, you may be granted an exemption, but may be required to submit alternative assessment to ensure all learning outcomes are met.
