This course explores the interface between venue, space, people and performance in diverse event settings. The course serves to showcase both commonalities and contrasts in creative and logistical elements of implementing an event execution and closing out of the event are addressed in this course. Students will apply the theoretical constructs acquired in EVNT7053 through interfacing with a real-world event.

This course is designed to review and apply theory to practice through organising and delivering events. The course builds upon EVNT7052 and EVNT7053 to provide students with the project management processes and skills necessary for successful event management. It specifically considers elements such as event conceptualisation, event operations, budgeting, human resource management and marketing, and encourages students to think through challenges that may arise through the event planning process. The course is presented as a series of seminars/workshops covering a range of themes and topics, augmented by practical exercises where students actually stage events.

Task description

Event Pitch 1

You will be working on a real event brief from the Council for Australasian University Tourism and Hospitality Educators (CAUTHE) Conference to be held in Brisbane in February 2025.

You will be focusing on two critical components of the event:

  1. Sponsorship
  2. Programming

You will work in small teams to design each component of the event to meet the client brief.

While this is a pitch, your group should submit a complete set of ALL materials for your planned activities.

Event Pitch 1 will be a maximum of 10 minutes.

NOTE: While all members of your team will contribute to the preparation of the pitch, given the strict 10 minute time limit, not all team members have to present.

However, ALL members of the team must be present at the pitch and also be prepared to answer questions asked by the event manager and/or your course staff.

The pitch will be presented live in the tutorial.

You will need to respond to questions about the pitch live in the tutorial.

The Event Pitch will be assessed on your team presentation, persuasiveness, suitability of the content of the pitch to reach the client brief, and your team's ability to respond to questions and feedback.

The completeness and quality of the materials to complete your tasks will also be assessed.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION - VERY IMPORTANT:

In the workplace, you are required to turn up to work regularly. Because of the nature of this course (ie, working with a real event client), you are expected to attend classes and consultations. It will also give you the opportunity to check progress and seek feedback from the Event Manager.

Further details about the Event Pitches will be discussed in class on Day 1.

This is the first of two Event Pitches.

Please Note: The presentation will be recorded for marking purposes per UQ Policy.

Peer Evaluation

Peer evaluation through BuddyCheck is an essential component of the assessment, ensuring fair and constructive feedback within the team. BuddyCheck will be open for 1 week after the assessment due date.
