EXMD4701 involves students undertaking supervised clinical practice in affiliated hospitals (public and private), clinics and community settings as required for accreditation as Exercise Physiologists with Exercise and Sports Science Australia. The School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences is committed to the reduction of urban bias in the content of its programs. Students undertaking clinical practicum as part of their programs in the School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences could, therefore, be allocated placements outside the Brisbane metropolitan area. Where allocated placements are 'rural / regional', students should expect to fund these places independently. Allocation of placements will be as equitable as possible. Issues of hardship will be dealt with at the discretion of the Practicum & Clinical Education Manager and Program Coordinator.
** Self-selecting students must have achieved a grade of a minimum of 5 in 2362, 2382, 3372 & 4742 to be eligible to be offered a Yr3, summer practicum.
Summer Semester: Limited capacity - Priority for places will be given to students who are expecting to graduate before the next summer semester offering of this course. Departmental consent required.
UQ's Clinical Exercise Physiologyᅠprogram holds full accreditation statusᅠwith Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA); meaning that upon completion, students are eligible to obtain Accredited Exercise Physiologyᅠcredentialing with ESSA.
EXMD4701 provides students the opportunity to undertake a minimumᅠ180 hours of practicum experience which contributesᅠtoᅠthe ESSA-mandated placement requirements for exercise physiology students.
Students will attend practicum off-campus, undertaking supervised clinical practice in affiliated hospitals (public and private), clinics, and community settings to provide client services inᅠESSA-defined areas of clinical practiceᅠ(core, emerging and niche), for block periods of at least 6 weeks.
Students will develop an ability to integrate the knowledge, physical skills, principles of evidence based practice, clinical reasoning, and ethical & professional behaviours that are necessary to function competently as an exercise physiologist.
Students in this course will undergo a supervised full-time professional practice placement. Professional skills & reflective practice will be facilitated in order to prepare the student for challenges in health care service andᅠdelivery. Emphasis will be placed on developing student's knowledge & skills to function autonomously as allied health care practitioners.ᅠ
Note: To undertake practicum, students must demonstrate evidence the following requirements:
- Current and valid First Aid certificate,
- Current and valid CPR certificate, and
- Successful completion of HMBS modules - defined as a pass rate above 80%.
First Aid, CPR certificates, and HMBS modules must be completed and uploaded to InPlace. Further information and support can be found here: Prepare for your Clinical Exercise Physiology placement.

Task description
As student practitioners embarking on your first or final clinical placement you are required (and very strongly encouraged) to reflect on your own performance at the end of your first week of placement. During your reflections you are required to ‘self-assess’ and provide a rating of your performance, graded on a Likert scale (‘Not Meeting Expectations’, ‘On Track to Meet Expectations’, ‘Meeting Expectations’, and ‘Exceeds Expectations’). Your reflections are based on the following eight professional attributes:
- Professional conduct
- Client interaction/rapport (Client facing skills)
- Collaborative practice
- Communication
- Awareness of limitations and work-readiness
- Exercise prescription
- Exercise assessment, and
- Exercise delivery
Your clinical educator has provided you with excerpts pulled from your logbooks that match sub-skills listed in either the “Client interaction/rapport”, “Collaborative practice”, and or “Communication” Professional Attributes. These can be found in your logbook feedback under “Exercising Insights: Self-Assessment”. You are strongly encouraged to reflect on these excerpts to better prepare your reflections for the self-assessment.
Following your reflections, student practitioners are required to develop three ‘SMART’ learning goals appropriate to their placement. These SMART goals will be tracked throughout your placement with your clinical educator often returning to these goals during your professional attribute’s intermediate assessment and your professional attributes final assessment.

Your clinical educator has provided you with excerpts pulled from your logbooks that match sub-skills listed in either the “Awareness of Limitations”, “Exercise Assessment”, “Exercise Prescription”, and or “Exercise Delivery” Professional Attributes. These can be found in your logbook feedback under “Exercising Insights: Intermediate Assessment”. You are strongly encouraged to reflect on these excerpts to better prepare yourself for the intermediate assessment. If this intermediate assessment is your final intermediate assessment you will be responsible for leading the assessment in full.
The purpose of the intermediate assessment is to provide students with an early indication of how they are performing, make sure they feel properly oriented and supported during their placement, and re-evaluate 'SMART' learning goals set during their self-assessment. In the case of any early difficulties, strategies for improvement can be implemented.
Use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT)
- The Professional Attributes Intermediate Assessment evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
- The Professional Attributes Intermediate Assessment is to be completed in-person. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools will not be permitted. Any attempted use of AI may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct
Submission guidelines
- Intermediate assessments are conducted by the student's clinical educator and no submission is required from the student.
- Students are required to initiate communication with their practicum supervisor and clinical educator to ensure that this assessment is scheduled in week three of their placement.
- It is strongly encouraged that students email their clinical educator by the end of their first week of placement to arrange and book the intermediate assessment.
- Intermediate assessments will be conducted with all three parties (i.e. student, practicum supervisor and clinical educator) either face-to-face at the placement site or online via Zoom or Teams where appropriate.
- Following the intermediate assessment, your clinical educator will provide each student practitioner and the placement supervisor with a summary of the focuses, and a summary of the intermediate assessmet.

Task description
Self-reflection is a vital skill to develop for understanding and evaluating experiences. This assessment piece is designed to support student's transition from theory to practice by promoting critical self-reflection. Students are required to analytically reflect upon a real-life ‘critical’ event, incident, activity or task that you experience on placement. A critical incident can be positive or negative. These are events or ‘light bulb moments’ which occurred during (or as a result of) your clinical development and have impacted you in an important (critical) way. A total of 2 reflections need to be submitted throughout the EXMD4701. Depending on how many placement hours you have accrued, the task will vary slightly. Please review the Critical Reflection Task Description carefully.
