EXMD4702 is one of the capstone courses within the Clinical Exercise Physiology program. It provides students with the opportunity to integrate knowledge, skills, principles of evidence based practice, clinical reasoning, and ethical and professional behaviours, in alignment with the competencies required by Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA).
As a part of this course, students will complete a minimum of 180 hours of practicum experience across affiliated hospitals (public and private), clinics and community settings. Throughout their practicum, students will provide services within ESSA’s defined areas of clinical practice (core, emerging and niche) in order to facilitate their development of professional skills, reflective practice, knowledge & ability to function autonomously as an Exercise Physiologist.
Students undertaking clinical practicum may be allocated to placements outside the Brisbane metropolitan area, including regional and remote settings. Students allocated to these settings are expected to fund the associated costs independently. However, additional supports may available to students undertaking these placements, including assistance with accommodation and financial relief where available. Placement allocations will be managed as equitably as possible, with cases of financial or personal hardship considered at the discretion of the Placement Coordinator.
To undertake practicum, students must meet all mandatory requirements as outlined here: Prepare for your Clinical Exercise Physiology placement and provider specific requirements.

Task description
- In order to demonstrate that students meet ESSA Practicum Standards during their placement, a record of activities or 'logbook' must be kept, detailing all relevant practicum hours. (For each log you must indicate the hours, domain, activities and add a description of the service provided)
- A minimum of of 180 hours of practicum is required to demonstrate competency across three exercise domains (exercise assessment, prescription, delivery, and 'other').
- Feedback from course coordinator must be addressed in a timely manner, before the end of semester, in order to receive a passing grade.
- Satisfactory level on InPlace is classified as having all logbook entries classed as “Finalised”.

Task description
As student practitioners embarking on your first or final clinical placement you are required to reflect on your own performance at the end of your first week of placement.
To complete this assessment you are required to ‘self-assess’ and provide a rating of your performance, graded on a Likert scale (‘Not Meeting Expectations’, ‘Development Required’, ‘Meeting Expectations’, and ‘Exceeds Expectations’). Your reflections are based on the following eight professional attributes:
- Professional conduct
- Client interaction/rapport (Client facing skills)
- Collaborative practice
- Communication
- Awareness of limitations and work-readiness
- Exercise prescription
- Exercise assessment, and
- Exercise delivery
Following your reflections, student practitioners are required to develop three ‘SMART’ learning goals appropriate to their placement. These SMART goals will be tracked throughout your placement with the course coordinator often returning to these goals during your professional attribute’s intermediate assessment and your professional attributes final assessment.

Submission via ePortfolio.

Task description
Student practitioners will have their performance on placement assessed by their practicum supervisor when they have accrued between 80 to 100 placement hours. Performance is graded on a Likert scale ('Not Meeting Expectations’, 'Development Required', 'Meeting Expectations', and 'Exceeds Expectations') and is based on eight professional attributes:
- Professional conduct
- Client interaction/rapport (Client facing skills)
- Collaborative practice
- Communication
- Awareness of Limitations and Work-Readiness
- Exercise Prescription
- Exercise Assessment, and
- Exercise Delivery
The purpose of the intermediate assessment is to provide students with an early indication of how they are performing, make sure they feel properly oriented and supported during their placement, and re-evaluate 'SMART' learning goals set during their self-assessment. In the case of any early difficulties, strategies for improvement can be implemented.
Submission guidelines
- Intermediate assessments are conducted by the student's practicum supervisor in week three of their placement. No submission is required from the student.
- It is strongly encouraged that students email their practicum supervisor by the end of their first week of placement to arrange and book the intermediate assessment.
- It is strongly recommended that the course coordinator attends your intermediate assessment, but is not required.
- Intermediate assessments can be conducted either face-to-face at the placement site or online via Zoom or Teams where appropriate.
Deferral or extension
You may be able to apply for an extension.
Discretionary extensions are not available for this task.

Task description
Self-reflection is a vital skill to develop for understanding and evaluating experiences. This assessment piece is designed to support student's transition from theory to practice by promoting critical self-reflection. Students are required to analytically reflect upon a real-life ‘critical’ event, incident, activity or task that you experience on placement. A critical incident can be positive or negative. These are events or ‘light bulb moments’ which occurred during (or as a result of) your clinical development and have impacted you in an important (critical) way. A total of 2 reflections need to be submitted throughout the course. They should provide insight into how your professional skills and attributes improve, the challenges you overcome and identify, and the new training methods you’ve added to your professional ‘toolbox’. Content should follow the SEALER reflection structure.

Task description
Students will have their performance on placement assessed by their practicum supervisor on their last day of placement (or as close to this as possible, considering scheduling requirements). Performance is graded on a Likert scale ('Not Meeting Expectations’, 'Development Required', 'Meeting Expectations', and 'Exceeds Expectations') and is based on eight professional attributes:
- Professional conduct
- Client interaction/rapport (Client facing skills)
- Collaborative practice
- Communication
- Awareness of limitations and work-readiness
- Exercise prescription
- Exercise assessment, and
- Exercise delivery
The purpose of the final assessment is to provide students with an indication of how they performed on placement to inform future placements and/or practice.
Hurdle requirements
A "Not Meeting Expectations" or "Development Required" score for any of the eight professional attributes will result in a fail grade overall.Submission guidelines
- Final assessments are conducted by the practicum supervisor (the course coordinator or the student are not required to be present).
- Students are required to send the final assessment link to their practicum supervisors at least 7 business days prior to the end of their placement.
- Students are required to communicate with their practicum supervisors to ensure that the final assessment is competed before the end of their placement. A “How-To” video has been made to guide you in sending the ‘final assessment link’ to your practicum supervisor.
- Practicum supervisors will complete the final supervisor assessment and submit via ePortfolio.

Task description
In order to prove that students meet ESSA Practicum Standards during their placement, a number of verification documents are required. This includes two key documents:
Practicum Summary Table
- This is an Excel table that lists all hours that will contribute to your accreditation application with ESSA. By the end of your degree, the table should list a minimum 140 apparently healthy hours, and a minimum 360 clinical hours.
Record of Student Engagement (ROSE) Form
- This form provides a summary of the activities you undertook on your clinical placement (i.e. a summary of what was included in your logbooks) and a reflection on how this placement assisted you to develop the ESSA exercise physiologist professional attributes (different to the ‘Professional Attributes’ used in your self-assessment, intermediate assessment, and final supervisor assessment) required for an Accredited Exercise Physiologist.
- A copy of the ESSA exercise physiologist professional attributes is attached below and have also been made available on Blackboard.

Additional course grading information
The course requires all assessment items to be graded to a satisfactory level to pass the course.
This course also contains two hurdle assessment items, specifically:
- A "Not Meeting Expectations" or "Development Required" score for any of the eight professional attributes in the Final Assessment will result in a fail grade overall.
- Submission of a ROSE form after 20 business days after the completion of placement will result in a fail grade overall.
Supplementary assessment
Supplementary assessment is not available for some items in this course.

Additional assessment information
The tasks in this course have been designed to be challenging, authentic and complex. Whilst students may use AI and/or MT technologies, successful completion of assessments in this course will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance.
A failure to reference generative AI or MT use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
To pass all assessment, students will be required to demonstrate detailed comprehension of their written submission independent of AI and MT tools.
