This course provides an introduction to the fundamental principles of finance that are at the core of financial management decisions. After completing this course, students will be familiar with the financial markets available in Australia and be able to: analyse and interpret financial statement data; value financial instruments using time value of money; evaluate financing and investment (capital budgeting) alternatives; and understand the relationship between risk, return and diversification.
This course will help you understand the financial side of business, but also to enable you to make informed basic financial decisions in your personal and professional life.
This course has been completely re-designed over 2019-2023, and any feedback has been incorporated to date. The required textbook for this course is the UQ Pressbook "Introduction to Financial Management: A Contemporary Approach". This is an online textbook that combines text, videos, interactive activities.
Every week you should complete a module independently and complete a weekly quiz on Blackboard that counts towards your final grade. These quizzes are there to ensure you keep up with the materials and come prepared for your weekly tutorials. Lectures are conducted every 2 weeks to review materials and to prepare for workshop assignments. During the semester, there will be four assignments where you apply your knowledge to real-world problems, including a 2 hour workshop session for each assignment.

Task description
There are 4 assignments during the semester. Each assignment will consist of an individual component (counting for 50% of the assignment mark) and a group component (50%).
The individual component is to be submitted on Blackboard by Monday 8:00AM in the workshop week. The group component will corroborate and build upon the individual component.
The group component consists of 2 parts. The 1st part is to be completed within the 2-hr workshop session and is thus due by the end of your workshop session. The 2nd part is to be submitted at 12:00pm exactly one week following your actual workshop session. The components for submission may include short videos, Excel spreadsheets, or reports, and details of the assignments will be posted at least 2 weeks before the individual component is due.
Your best three workshop scores will each be worth 15% of your final grade for this course.
