Provides students with techniques for evaluating investments on an individual basis and in the context of portfolio. Techniques for analysing investments focus on maximising expected returns while minimising risk. The most powerful way to achieve this objective is by creating a portfolio of investments. Topics covered are Financial Statement Analysis, Markets and Instruments, Equity Investments, Debt Investments and Portfolio Management.

This course covers investments in the portfolios of institutional and individual investors, including equity, debt, private equity, and managed funds. Topics include financial markets, portfolio theory, and asset valuation. A course objective is to help you develop skills in valuing assets, making investment choices, and forming investment portfolios.

This course has been designed specifically for the BAFE program and has been iteratively improved over the past six years. This course is designed around a large authentic company valuation team project. This experience aims to replicate the experience of an intern or first year analyst. This course is often considered a challenging experience, but we provide a lot of support to students through workshops, tutorials and consultation, all tutors have previously completed this course and helped to improve its design.

Sustainable Development Goals - UQ Business School is a proud supporter and Advanced Signatory of the United Nations Principles for Responsible Management Education (UN PRME). Aims and outcomes

This course aims to provide students with a solid grounding in the key components of investment analysis and portfolio construction. The skills developed in this course will enable students to determine the value of various assets, evaluate the investment decision and determine whether the trade-off between the anticipated return andᅠthe anticipated risk is worth investing in. Students should also achieve the ability to value investments in the context of a portfolio and quantify the contribution they make to the return and risk of a portfolio. These skills will be further developed and expanded in subsequent courses.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

LO1.

Analyse financial data in order to assess a particular investment or investment strategy (including conducting a valuation of an investment).
