Students will participate in a group project to develop and practice a range of skills. Each group will be assigned a live problem from industry, government or the not-for-profit sector. Students will address the problem using their economic skills and knowledge. Emphasis will be placed on the ability to tailor existing theory, concepts and techniques to the problem at hand.
Bachelor of Advanced Finance & Economics (Honours) students undertaking the industry pathway must complete either FINM4411 or ECON4411.
FINM4411 is structured in a way that allows students to develop a deeper understanding of finance by working as part of a team on real-world issues that have been identified by an industry partner.
At the outset, students are encouraged to source their own projects as they are likely to be in line with their interests and that of potential employers. We expect to have a small number of possible topics, and these will be sent to students prior to the commencement of the semester.
Students are encouraged to express a preference for the potential topics and/or to propose potential topics and industry partners. Ultimately students will be assigned to teams by the instructor by the first week of the semester.

Task description
You are required to form a team of 3 or 4 students to address a live industry problem. The first task you must complete is a project plan for how your team will address the issue. The purpose of a project plan is to scope the project, allocate individual tasks, and plan timelines for project completion.
To guide you in the completion of this task, your team is required to create a project plan that addresses the following details:
- The issue, and relevant background information.
- The proposed approach for researching and analysing the issue.
- How the work will be allocated amongst group members (this should include equally allocating various aspects of compiling the industry report such as writing the initial draft, editing subsequent drafts, formatting the document).
- Any anticipated difficulties in completing the project.
- A timeline.
There are two components to this assessment task:
(A) Written (due: 21 August, 3 pm) which must include all elements mentioned above, with total word limit of up to a maximum of 2,000 words. (10% of overall grade)
(B) Oral presentation by group to determine progress (due: 22 August, in class, 10% of overall grade). The presentation will be held during scheduled lecture time (though we might have to start earlier to accommodate all teams).
This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
Submission guidelines
Submit Part A electronically via Blackboard. Part B is an in-person presentation.

Task description
The Individual Report will consist of the research and analysis that you individually undertook as evidence of your contribution towards the final Report. How this research is allocated amongst your team members (i.e., who researches what aspect/s of the issue) will have been decided as part of the project planning stage (Assessment Task 1).
You will clearly and concisely communicate your findings in a written report, addressing the following elements:
- Identify and explain one (max 2) aspect of the industry issue for detailed analysis
- Review relevant secondary sources related to this aspect. These secondary sources may include academic research, industry reports, etc.
- Analyse findings and discuss how these apply to the industry issue.
Please note:
- This task requires you to include a much more in-depth analysis of the aspect/s of the issue you are researching. Given this level of analysis, you will not be able to include all of this detail in the final team report.
- This is NOT a student's reflection on the work they did for the project.
- This 30% is NOT for writing drafts (or editing, formatting, proof-reading) of the industry report. Each team member is assumed to contribute roughly equally towards composing the report that is submitted to the industry partner.
This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
Submission guidelines
The individual reports are to be submitted at the same time as the final (industry) report. The submitted PDF file should include the individual research reports as appendices.
Deferral or extension
You may be able to apply for an extension.
Late submission
A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.

All submissions (slides in pdf format, the industry report and individual research reports) are due by 3pm on 23rd October 2024.
The presentations of the final report will occur on 24-25 October, 2024.
