This course is an industry-focussed capstone experience where students will conduct an industry placement and a research project on a question co-created with industry. Students will be co-supervised by a UQ academic supervisor and an industry supervisor. During the first three weeks, students will engage with their industry partner to co-create the research questions for the research project, which will be carried out in semester 1, with emphasis on defining the research issue, establishing methodology, undertaking appropriate analysis of data, and drawing defensible conclusions. In the second semester, students will undertake an industry placement with their industry supervisor. This placement, which is held over a period of up to 14 weeks (maximum 560 hours), involves continuous, structured industry experience, related to their research project, in a production or service enterprise. It enables the students to apply their theoretical knowledge and research skills developed in their undergraduate program.
From 2024 students must complete a research project contract in collaboration with a research supervisor.
Students must submit the Research Project Contract by the first Thursday of Teaching Week 1 in February for students commencing in Semester 1, and by the first Thursday of Teaching Week 1 in July for students commencing in Semester 2 to agriculture@enquire.uq.edu.au.
This course is an industry-focussed capstone experience where students will conduct an industry placement and a research project on a question co-created with industry. Students will be co-supervised by an academic supervisor and an industry supervisor.ᅠ Students will commence the course by enrolling in 2-unit online course (MKTG3968) that is designed to enhance graduate attributes.ᅠ Students will complete the online course in the first semester.ᅠ During first semester, students will also be engaging with their industry placement supervisor to co-create the research questions for the research project.ᅠ Students will then work with both supervisors (industry and academic) to plan their research,ᅠᅠwith emphasis on defining the research issue, establishing methodology, undertaking appropriate analysis of data, and drawing defensible conclusions.ᅠ Most of the industry placement will take place in semester 2.ᅠThe placement and the research on placement will be jointly supervised by the academic and industry supervisor. Theᅠplacement, which is held over a period of 13 weeks, involves continuous, structured industry experience, related to their research project, in a production or service enterprise. It enables the students to apply their theoretical knowledge and research skills developed in their undergraduate program.ᅠ Students will work with their supervisors to develop the work program.ᅠ
Students will be expected to have completed a Bachelor of Science with a major in Food Science and Technology with a GPA of 5.5 or greater.
Students shouldᅠhave a sound working knowledge of food science, food chemistry, food microbiology, food technology, food safety and quality management, inᅠparticular HACCP. Companies require students to have these areas of knowledge and corresponding relevant skills, before considering them toᅠundertake an industry placement.
Students need to have good written and oral communication skills, and be able to interact effectively with staff at different levels in the organisation.ᅠStudents are expected to manage their time effectively, participate, accept responsibilities, meet deadlines, andᅠat all times act in a professional andᅠethical manner.
You'll need to complete the following courses before enrolling in this one:
Bachelor of Science with a major in Food Science and Nutrition or Food Technology.
You can't enrol in this course if you've already completed the following:
FOOD6002
Bachelor of Science (Honours) and Bachelor of Advanced Science in the field of studies Food Technology or Food Science and Nutrition.
Consultation is by appointment. To make an appointment, please email.
The timetable for this course is available on the UQ Public Timetable.
The aim of this course is to introduce student to industry-aligned research and translation. Know how to define a research problem of importance to industry, state a research hypothesis and plan a process for the investigation of the problem.
LO2.
Obtain experience designing and implementing a research project co-created with industry.
LO3.
Get experience analysing, processing, and interpreting research data and drawing relevant, statistically robust conclusions.
LO4.
Understand how theoretical skills can be transferred to application and commercial impact.
LO5.
Demonstrate professional skills in the workplace including effective oral and written communication, team interaction skills, time management skills, ability to work independently and uphold ethical practice.

The Placement Supervisor will evaluate the progress, performance and conduct of the student. This is completed approximately 4 weeks after commencement to provide feedback to the student on development opportunities for improvement in subsequent weeks. Students are responsible for chasing up the completion of the report by the Placement Supervisor. The Placement Supervisor is encouraged to use the report as an opportunity to conduct a formal performance review session with the student and provide face-to-face feedback before submitting the report via email to n.bansal@uq.edu.au or surfadmin@uq.edu.au
If the supervisor report is unsatisfactory, the student will be called to UQ for a discussion and to implement a one-week performance plan. The placement supervisor will be asked to report again after the week, and if performance is still unsatisfactory, the student can be pulled out of the placement and will automatically fail the course.
This assessment task evaluates student’s abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
You must submit your Assessment task, in Blackboard, via the Turnitin link by the submission deadline. You should also retain an electronic copy of every piece of assessment you submit.

COURSE GRADING AND ASSESSMENT HURDLES
Students must obtain a passing mark in the Academic Supervisor Report AND the Industry Supervisor Report to pass this course.
If a student obtains an overall percentage greater than the cut-offs set to achieve a 4 or higher for the course based on marks from a combination of progressive assessment and theᅠAcademic Supervisor and Industry Supervisor Reports, and the student does NOT score a passing mark in the Academic Supervisor and Industry Supervisor Reports, they are unable to achieve a grade higher than a 3 (failing grade) for the course.
