This course involves 400-480 hours of industry experience, through a work integrated learning placement in a production or service enterprise. It enables students to apply to that industry the theoretical knowledge and research skills they have developed earlier in the Master of Food Science and Technology program. Students will also acquire a greater understanding of industry operations and requirements, which will enhance their career opportunities.

Information about enrolling in a placement course, including registering your interest and application deadlines, can be found here: science.uq.edu.au/placements. Eligible students will apply for UQ-sourced placement opportunities in a competitive selection process.

This course provides students with program-related industry experience and an opportunity to further their professional skills training in an authenticᅠenvironment. Students will gain practical experience in the application of theoretical concepts and knowledge, while acquainting themselves with the real-world conditions and activities of their industry before graduating.

Students will undertake 400-480 hours of placementᅠin an enterprise such as a foodᅠproduction company or food research organisation. This placement is organised by Science Industry Placements. Students should be mindful that UQ Industry Partners make decisions about which student/s will be offered a placement with their organisation. This is a competitive process. Once the student accepts a placement opportunity organised with an industry host partner, the student cannot withdraw from the offer and drop their course enrolment, unless due to extenuating circumstances which will need to be presented to and discussed with the Course Coordinator. The Course Coordinator will deal with these issues on a case-by-case basis.

In addition to the workplace requirements, students will attend compulsory orientation and employability workshops before and after the placement, learning the importance of self-reflection in their personal and professional development, and improving their ability to articulate their skills and experiences to potential employers.

The host organisation will appoint a Placement Supervisor for each student. The Course Coordinator acts as the Academic Supervisor and is available to resolve issues that arise during the placement, as well as discuss progress with the Placement Supervisor and the student.

Industry placements are generally unpaid. Please be aware UQ insurance coverage applies to unpaid placements. If the student is paid, the company is required to insure the student.

During the placement, students will adhere to the UQ Student Charter (https://ppl.app.uq.edu.au/content/3.60.01-student-charter) and the UQ Placements in Coursework Programs Policy (https://ppl.app.uq.edu.au/content/3.10.04-placements-coursework-programs), as well as act in accordance with host organisation’s policies, procedures and regulations. Students may be asked to enter into a confidentiality and intellectual property agreement with the host organisation. Students should seek their own independent legal advice to ensure they are aware of their obligations and before signing such agreements. The UQ Union (https://www.uqu.com.au/student-support/legal) offers a free legal service to all UQ Students who are currently enrolled.

For student administrative matters relating to this course, please email agriculture@enquire.uq.edu.au (http://enquire.uq.edu.au) (mailto:agriculture@enquire.uq.edu.au) or phone 3365 1171.

The final video reflection is due on the final due date of the teaching semester by COB. Students should focus on responding to the learning objectives and goals originally identified in their Learning Contract. The video can be recorded using your smart phone, and then uploaded and submitted through the Anthology Portfolio submission link on Blackboard.

Task description

The Placement Supervisor will evaluate the progress, performance and conduct of the student. This is completed approximately 4 weeks after commencement to provide feedback to the student on development opportunities for improvement in subsequent weeks.

Five working days prior to the due date of the Supervisor Report 1, students will ensure the relevant weekly timesheets from the Excel Logbook are exported and combined as a single pdf file.

To trigger this assessment, the student will submit a photograph of themselves (a professional headshot suitable for a LinkedIn profile), along with a pdf of the Logbook with a record of their workplace attendance and a summary of their weekly activities to UQ’s Anthology Portfolio system.

DO NOT ASSIGN THE COURSE COORDINATOR AS THE ASSESSOR. Students will assign their Placement Supervisor as the assessor. This triggers an email to the Placement Supervisor to access the report in Anthology Portfolio. Students are responsible for chasing up the completion of the report by the Placement Supervisor, through the Anthology Portfolio system. The Placement Supervisor is encouraged to use the report as an opportunity to conduct a formal performance review session with the student and provide face-to-face feedback before submitting the report electronically.

If the Supervisor Report is unsatisfactory, the student will be called to UQ for a discussion and to implement a one-week performance plan. The Placement Supervisor will be asked to report again after the week, and if performance is still unsatisfactory, the student can be pulled out of the placement, and will be requested to withdraw from the course.
