FREN1010 is the first course in ᅠthe series FREN1010, FREN1020, FREN2010 and FREN2020. It provides an introduction to basic communication skills in the French language and is designed for students with no previous experience in French, enabling beginners to reach A1 level on the Common European Frame of Reference language proficiency scale. Course requirements
Assumed background
FREN1010 assumes ᅠno previous experience with the French language. It caters for students who did not learn French at school and who would like to start French at University as well as those with a very limited experience of the language (up to Year 10 in Australia). Senior French is incompatible with this course. All students must complete a placement test which is ᅠa hurdle to pass the course. Go to https://courseplacements.languages-cultures.uq.edu.au/ Any student who does not complete the placement test and who is NOT placed in FREN1010 cannot receive a grade higher than 3.ᅠPlease note that enrolments may be refused on the basis of previous French study or abilities, and enrolment in a different course may be recommended.ᅠ

Aims and outcomes
The general aim of the course is to develop a basic ability to interact with people in French and to build cultural awareness. Special emphasis is placed on speaking and understanding spoken French. The course aims to achieve the CEFR A1 (http://rm.coe.int/CoERMPublicCommonSearchServices/DisplayDCTMContent?documentId=090000168045bb52) abilities.

Task description
All students are required to demonstrate they have been correctly placed in FREN1010. Failure to do so will result in a maximum grade of 3 in the course. This is a hurdle requirement. This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT). Hurdle requirements
Student must be placed in FREN1010 via the placement questionnaire. If they are not, they cannot achieve higher than a 3 in the course regardless of performance in other assessment tasks. Prior language learning provides an unfair advantage over true beginners.Submission guidelines

Task description
For this activity, you will listen to and answer questions in French using appropriate vocabulary and grammar from Units 1 and 2 as well as in-class materials. This activity tests your listening comprehension and speaking ability.
REQUIREMENTS: You are required to have stable access to internet, a working microphone and headset to complete this activity. You are highly encouraged to complete the Practice Test in Week 5 to test your technology. Technological problems are not a valid excuse for extension requests.
Duration: 20 minutes
This assessment item allows you to demonstrate competency at a low A1 level on the CEFR language proficiency scale for Spoken Interaction and Listening. Task description
In this task you will be required to demonstrate competence in writing using the grammatical structures and verb forms studied in weeks 1-8. You will write 120-180 words in response to a prompt. You will be penalised proportionately for not respecting the word limit. Information beyond 200 words will not be considered.

Task description
The subject of the Oral Interview will be published by Week 11. In preparation, students will work in groups of two to practice topics, vocabulary and structures covered in Défi1 Units 1-4. Students will sign up for an interview slot via Blackboard.
On the day of the assessment, students will participate in a simulation run by a staff member in French. They will ask and answer questions using expressions and structures studied in the course. Students are responsible for forming a group (selecting a partner and obtaining contact details) at least two weeks prior to the assessment. The preparation work is to be completed outside of class. Students are individually marked but demonstrate ability to interact in French by working with a group. If a team member requests an extension for whatever reason, the extension will only be valid for the team member and not the whole group.
An official UQ ID card is required for attendance at the final oral interview.
Duration: approximately 4 minutes per student
This assessment item allows you to demonstrate competency at A1 level on the CEFR language proficiency scale for Spoken Production, Spoken Interaction and Listening. (Link to Common European Frame of Reference).
STATEMENT ON AI & MT
This assessment task is to be completed in-person. The use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT) tools will not be permitted. Any attempted use of AI or MT may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
Hurdle requirements
Students must obtain a minimum score of 40% (i.e. 16 out of 40 possible marks) on the Oral Interview to pass this course. Students who do not achieve at least 40% on the Oral Interview can only receive an overall grade of 3 or less for the course.Submission guidelines
The interview may be completed using Zoom and, if so, invigilation will be undertaken by UQ staff. The examination sessions will be recorded and retained for 12 months on a secure UQ system in accordance with UQ policy specifically Assessment Procedure Section 6 - Recording and Reporting. Access to recordings will be limited to the relevant School, Faculty and Student & Academic Services staff and only accessed for the purpose of reviewing recordings.

In the case of an extension, the student may participate in the interview without a partner or group. This is an end of semester assessment during exam period. Approved extensions will be rescheduled based on assessors' availability.
