Introduction to basic skills of communication in French language. Open only to students with no previous experience of French. Part 1 of 2-semester program leading to FREN2010.
FREN1010 is the first course inﾠthe series FREN1010, FREN1020, FREN2010 and FREN2020. It is designed to enable beginners to reach A1 level on the Common European Frame of Reference language proficiency scale. [Click to self-assess your CEFR level].
Students are expected to attend FREN1010 starting with the first course meeting in Week 1.ﾠ
Course requirements
Assumed background
FREN1010 assumesﾠno previous experience with the French language. It caters for students who did not learn French at school and who would like to start French at University as well as those with a very limited experience of the language (up to Year 10 in Australia). Senior French is incompatible with this course. All students must complete a placement test which isﾠa hurdle to pass the course. Go to https://courseplacements.languages-cultures.uq.edu.au/ Any student who does not complete the placement test and who is NOT placed in FREN1010 cannot receive a grade higher than 3.ﾠPlease note that enrolments may be refused on the basis of previous French study or abilities, and enrolment in a different course may be recommended.ﾠ

Aims and outcomes
The general aim of the course is to develop a basic ability to interact with people in French and to build cultural awareness. Special emphasis is placed on speaking and understanding spoken French. The course aims to achieve the CEFR A1 (http://rm.coe.int/CoERMPublicCommonSearchServices/DisplayDCTMContent?documentId=090000168045bb52) abilities.

Task description
Duration: 5-10 minutes, depending on the student's background in French (no prior knowledge of French required).
It is necessary to be placed in the course prior to the end of Week 2 so that students can seek alternative courses if necessary.
All students are required to demonstrate they have been correctly placed in FREN1010. Failure to do so will result in a maximum grade of 3 in the course. This is a hurdle requirement. During the Course Placement questionnaire, you may be asked to write a few sentences in French. This must be your own unassisted work so we can accurately place you.
This assessment task evaluates student’s abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
Hurdle requirements
Student must be placed in FREN1010 via the placement questionnaire. If they are not, they cannot achieve higher than a 3 in the course regardless of performance in other assessment tasks. Prior language learning provides an unfair advantage over true beginners.Submission guidelines

Task description
For this activity, using the Inspera platform, you will listen to and answer questions in French, and then read a short text in French and fill in the blanks with appropriate verbs, articles and prepositions. The interaction will be based on grammar and vocabulary from Units 1 and 2 as well as in-class materials.
REQUIREMENTS: You are required to have stable access to internet, a working microphone and headset to complete this activity. You are highly encouraged to complete the Practice Test in Week 5 to test your technology. Technological problems are not a valid excuse for an extension.
Duration: 45 minutes

In this task you will be required to demonstrate competence in writing using the grammatical structures and verb forms studied in weeks 1-8. You will write 120-180 words in response to a prompt. You will be penalised proportionately for not respecting the word limit.

Task description
The listening activity will be based on Défi 1 Units 1-4 (Livre + Cahier) and all materials distributed in class or on Blackboard. Students will watch a video recording of a French speaker and answer questions about the content of the interview.

Task description
The subject of the Oral Interview will be published in week 11. In preparation, students will work in groups of two to practise topics, vocabulary and structures covered in Défi1 Units 1-4.
Duration: approx 4 mns per student (groups of two students are scheduled for 10 minutes)
On the day of the assessment, students will participate in a simulation run by a staff member in French. They will ask and answer questions using expressions and structures studied in the course. Students are responsible for forming a group (selecting a partner and obtaining contact details) at least two weeks prior to the assessment. The preparation work is to be completed outside of class. Students are individually marked but demonstrate ability to interact in French by working with a group. If a team member requests an extension for whatever reason, the extension will only be valid for the team member and not the whole group. An official UQ ID card is required for attendance at the final oral interview.

This assessment task is to be completed in-person. The use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT) tools will not be permitted. Any attempted use of AI or MT may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
Hurdle requirements
Students must obtain a minimum score of 40% (14 out of 35 possible marks) on the Oral Interview to pass this course. Students who do not achieve at least 40% on the Oral Interview can only receive an overall grade of 3 or less for the course.Submission guidelines

This is an end of semester assessment during exam period. Approved extensions will be rescheduled based on assessors' availability.
