Builds on language and communication skills acquired in FREN1010 & FREN1020. A short autobiography provides opportunities for greater work on reading skills.
Eligibility to enrol
FREN2010 is open to students who have successfully completed FREN1020 or ᅠ2 years of ab initio (beginner) French at high school.
Students who have had approximately 100 hours of French tuition in another institution and have reached a low intermediate level may be allowed to enrol in the course but only after placement (complete the questionnaire at https://courseplacements.languages-cultures.uq.edu.au/).
This course is not available to students who have successfully completed standard Year 12 French (i.e. 4 or 5 years at high school) in the last two years.ᅠ
If you completed Yr 12 French in the previous two calendar year with a result of A (VHA) or B (HA), please enrol in FREN2112 instead as you will not receive credit for FREN2010.ᅠ
Students with documentary evidence that they obtained only a minimal passing grade (grade of “C” or “Satisfactory Achievement” in Queensland) for Year 12 French, or who completed Year 12 French more than two years ago, should complete the questionnaire at https://courseplacements.languages-cultures.uq.edu.au/ to be assessed on their eligibility to enrol in FREN2010.
NB — ᅠCorrect placement in FREN2010 is a hurdle requirement for passing this course.ᅠ

Timetable
The timetable for this course is available on the UQ Public Timetable.
Additional timetable information
All classes begin in week 1.
Each class group (e.g. TUT 1) meets for 2 x 2 hour classes (= 4 hours per week).ᅠ Attendance is essential to succeed in this course, since the learning tasks are designed to promote your acquisition of the language, and, in particular, the skills of oral interaction.
Public holidays:
Alternative arrangements for affected students will be announced through the Blackboard site.
Class allocation:
In order to optimise the student experience, it may be necessary to reallocate students to a different class from their first choice. Before this happens, every effort will be made to enable students to voluntarily change into an alternative class that is suitable. Please note: Teaching staff do not have access to the timetabling system to help with class allocation. Therefore, should you need
help with your timetable and/or allocation of classes, please ensure you email hass.mytimetable@uq.edu.au from your UQ student email account with the following details:
- Full name,
- Student ID, and
- the Course Code

Aims and outcomes
We will continue to build on the skills for communication in French reached in first year beginners. The emphasis is on learning to use everyday speech and to communicate in day-to-day situations. We will also use supplementary materials to develop listening comprehension and the ability to read simple authentic texts. Students will expand their repertoire of vocabulary, verb tenses, verb moods and their ability to deal with different textual genres.
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
LO1.
communicate with others in French at low B1 level: ask and answer questions on familiar topics (past, present and future activities, accommodation, jobs, study, leisure); express preferences; make suggestions, invitations and appointments; accept and decline invitations; tell a story about something that has happened.
LO2.
understand spoken French when the topic is familiar
LO3.
read autobiographical texts, simple short stories, and short factual articles in French
LO4.
write emails and other short texts in French on familiar topics
LO5.
show awareness of Francophone cultural practices and points of view on familiar topics
LO6.
demonstrate the ability to use French accurately with respect to the structures, verb tenses and moods covered in the course.

Task description
All students are required to demonstrate that FREN2010 is the appropriate course for them. Failure to do so will result in a maximum grade of 3 in the course. This is a hurdle requirement. No assessment items will be marked until this has been completed.
How to demonstrate that you are appropriately enrolled?
- Students who have passed FREN1020 have already passed this hurdle.
- Students who have been placed in this course by academic staff in the French programme, via the course placement questionnaire, have already passed this hurdle.
Students who have neither passed FREN1020 nor been placed in FREN2010 in the manner indicated should complete a placement questionnaire at: https://courseplacements.languages-cultures.uq.edu.au/
STATEMENT ON AI & MT
This assessment task evaluates student’s abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
Hurdle requirements
This is a hurdle requirement. If you do not pass the placement hurdle (either because you don't do the test or because you are placed in another course) you cannot get a grade higher than "3" in this course. If you are awarded a grade of "3" on the basis of this hurdle, you are eligible for supplementary assessment and the supplementary assessment will be the placement test: if you pass the placement test as a supplementary assessment item, you can be awarded a grade of "4" but no higher.Submission guidelines
