Further development of communication skills in French language. It provides for the further development of oral skills, accompanied by a new emphasis on reading and writing in French.

FREN2020 gives students the opportunity to reach B1 on the Common European Frame of Reference for Languages, that is, to reach the level of Independent User:

Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken.ᅠ Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.1

The ᅠlearning experiences of FREN2020 continue to feature interaction and collaboration in the French language. n nᅠaddition to the textbook, we will look at other authentic materials. The final stages of the course include a focus on work and employability.ᅠ

Course requirements

Assumed background

FREN2020 is a course enabling students to progress to low B1 level on the CEFR (Common European Frame of Reference) language proficiency scale.ᅠ

The formal prerequisite for FREN2020 is FREN2010. Students who do not fulfil this prerequisite, but who have an equivalent knowledge of French (e.g. from equivalent study at high school, or interstate or overseas, or from residence in a French-speaking country) may apply to enrol in FREN2020 by completing the questionnaire at ᅠhttps://courseplacements.languages-cultures.uq.edu.au/. Please also note that enrolments may be refused on the basis of such knowledge or abilities and enrolment in a different course may be recommended.

Prerequisites

You'll need to complete the following courses before enrolling in this one:

FREN2010 or placement test

Course staff

Timetable

The timetable for this course is available on the UQ Public Timetable.

Additional timetable information

Active participation in classes is an essential learning requirement in this course.

Public holidays:

Alternative arrangements for affected students will be announced through the Blackboard site.

Class allocation:

In order to optimise the student experience, it may be necessary to reallocate students to a different class from their first choice. Before this happens, every effort will be made to enable students to voluntarily change into an alternative class that is suitable.

Please note: Teaching staff do not have access to the timetabling system to help with class allocation. Therefore, should you need help with your timetable and/or allocation of classes, please ensure you email hass.mytimetable@uq.edu.au from your UQ student email account with the following details:

  • Full name,
  • Student ID, and
  • the Course Code

Task description

All students are required to demonstrate they have been correctly placed in FREN2020. This is a hurdle requirement. Failure to be correctly placed will result in a maximum grade of 3 in the course. No assessment items will be marked until this has been completed.

During the Course Placement questionnaire, you may be asked to write a short text in French. This must be your own unassisted work so we can accurately place you.

This assessment task evaluates student’s abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Hurdle requirements

Students who have passed FREN2010 have already passed this hurdle. Students who have been placed in this course by academic staff in the French programme, via the course placement portal, have already passed this hurdle. Students who have neither passed FREN2010 nor been placed in FREN2020 in the manner indicated should complete a placement questionnaire at: https://courseplacements.languages-cultures.uq.edu.au/

Task description

You will pick one of three job advertisements and record a video CV in which you pitch yourself as the ideal candidate for the position you have chosen. This task will focus in particular on work covered while studying units 5 and 6 of Défi 2, and allows you to demonstrate competence at B1 level on the CEFR scales for Spoken Production and Reading Comprehension

  • Length : 90 seconds - 120 seconds (one and a half minutes - 2 minutes) (These are the minimum and maximum acceptable lengths: the mark for anything shorter will be penalized proportionally and the marker will not listen beyond the maximum length).
  • You should not use notes; there is no need for special effects or captions, just you speaking to the camera, without editing.
  • You will submit both your video (instructions will be provided on Blackboard) and a transcription of what you said. The work will not be considered as completely submitted until both parts have been uploaded.
  • Instructions for recording and uploading the video will be provided on Blackboard.
  • The transcription should be uploaded to Turnitin. It will not be assessed, but it will allow your lecturer to provide you with detailed feedback.

Use of generative AI : This task has been designed to be challenging, authentic and complex. Whilst students may use AI technologies, successful completion of this assessment item will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance. A failure to reference AI use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct. To pass this assessment, students will be required to demonstrate detailed comprehension of their written submission independent of AI tools.

Submission guidelines
