A detailed study of Greek literary and historical texts chosen by the Course Coordinator.

GREK3002 is an advanced course in Ancient Greek Language and Literature with 2 hours of class one day a week.

In semester 2 of 2024 we will read Sophocles' play Oedipus Tyrannos. Students willᅠ read, translate and critically discuss 100 - 120 lines of this play per weekᅠover the course of the semester. By analysing thisᅠimportant ancient Greek dramatic textᅠwithin itsᅠhistorical and cultural context, and discussing its reception, students will gain an in-depth knowledge of an outstanding example of ancient ᅠGreek tragedy, and its literary and mythical significance. Students will also be introduced to the nuances of ancient Greek poetic verse through the study of scansion of iambic trimeter lines, poetic vocabulary, grammar,ᅠsyntax, and literary devices, and thus gain a greater understanding of the social and cultural values of the Ancient Greek world as expressed through its language, ᅠliterature and drama.

Before each meeting students are expected to have prepared an agreed amount of text for translation and discussion, which may include relevant points of scansion, grammar and syntax, literary style, mythical and historical allusions, and odd words in the prepared material. Regular preparation, participation and attendanceᅠ are very important.
