GRMN1010 is a beginners' course in German language, introducing basic skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. The level of competence inculcated by GRMN1010, ᅠfollowed byᅠ the second-semester course GRMN1020, is similar to that inculcated by Senior German. The School of Languagesᅠ and Cultures treats a pass in GRMN1010, followed by a pass in GRMN1020, as equivalent to a pass in Senior German for the purposes of continuing language study.
Course requirements
Assumed background
GRMN1010 is a "zero-beginners" course, so it has no assumed background, and no formal prerequisite. However, students with a limited knowledge of German (e.g. Grade 9 standard) are entitled to enrol. If in doubt, please consult the course coordinator.
Incompatible
You can't enrol in this course if you've already completed the following:
Senior German completed within the last 5 years
Course staff
Course coordinator
Lecturer
Timetable
The timetable for this course is available on the UQ Public Timetable.
Additional timetable information
This course has 3 tutorial hours (50 minutes each). The 3 tutorial hours are delivered in two sessions (75 minutes each) per week throughout the teaching semester. Students are expected to attend all sessions of the tutorial group in which they are enrolled.
Learning expectations:
Lesson content and self-access learning materials are shared weekly via the Blackboard site. Classes are not recorded. Regular engagement with the course content, active participation during class activities and conscientious completion of weekly homework tasks are essential to attaining the expected outcomes of this course and to the overall progression towards higher levels of German language proficiency.
As a 2-unit course, GRMN1010 comprises approximately 130 hours of work in total. Excluding the weekly tutorial sessions, students are expected to devote at least 7 hours per week to private study, engaging, for instance with available pre-lesson activities, post-lesson consolidation and revision tasks, etc. Once enrolled, students are expected to check information available on Blackboard regularly to keep informed regarding weekly content, online learning activities and dates for assessment tasks.
Public holidays:
Alternative arrangements for affected students will be announced through the Blackboard site.
Class allocation:
In order to optimise the student experience, it may be necessary to reallocate students to a different class from their first choice. Before this happens, every effort will be made to enable students to voluntarily change into an alternative class that is suitable. Please note: Teaching staff do not have access to the timetabling system to help with class allocation. Therefore, should you need
help with your timetable and/or allocation of classes, please ensure you email hass.mytimetable@uq.edu.au from your UQ student email account with the following details:
- Full name,
- Student ID, and
- the Course Code
Additional information and support can be found here.
