This course provides skills in research design for students undertaking Honours in Arts and Culture or related disciplines. The course is taught as a combination of 5 weeks of research design, and 5 weeks of thematic/discipline streams (Part 2) where students choose the area (art history, communications, drama, film & television, journalism, literature, media & digital cultures, music) most relevant to their thesis research. Topics include seminars on how to design a research project, becoming a researcher, writing a literature review, research management, and research dissemination. The course concludes with a 2 week symposium where students present their project to their peers, lecturers, and industry experts. Students also have access to a range of online modules on research skills.

Aims and outcomes
This course aims to develop skills in research design and research methods in Arts and Culture to support the completion of an Honours thesis and provide a foundation for future research or professional endeavours.

Recording of Oral and Practical Assessment
- All presentations will be recorded for marking purposes via recording facilities available where the assessment takes place (eg. ECHO360, Zoom, camera device)
- Recordings will be retained by the School of Communication and Arts for at least 12 months from the release of the final grade for the course.
- Recordings will be stored in a secure manner and will only be accessed by authorised school staff for the purposes of:
- Moderation of marking;
- Provision of feedback to the student(s) recorded; and/or
- Re-marking following a successful re-mark application.

Task description
Students must actively participate in the 13 sessions of the course by doing the course readings, contributing to class discussions, and offering feedback to their peers during the symposium. Throughout the course, students must also complete a minimum of 2 online Research Design modules and/or on-campus Research Skills modules. With their supervisor, they will determine which modules best suit their research trajectory. Completion of 2 modules will be included in the course management mark (modules = 5%, class participation = 5%).

Attendance at face-to-face/Zoom modules will be recorded by Module presenters, and online self-paced Modules will involve completion of a short quiz. Certificates/evidence of completion for research modules must be uploaded to the Blackboard assessment link by 4pm, 30 May 2025. For class participation, ensure that you sign the attendance sheet.
Deferral or extension
You cannot defer or apply for an extension for this assessment.

Course guidelines
Communication Expectations
While you are a student at UQ, all communication must be conducted according to the UQ Student Code of Conduct. The UQ Library has a helpful Communicate and collaborate online module .
- Email is the primary way for you to send messages to, and receive information from, the School and our staff.
- You must use your UQ email address (not a private address) to communicate with staff.
- You should add a clear subject line, including course code, and a 2-3 word statement.
- You can send email at any time, however please do not expect responses outside normal working hours (Monday to Friday from ~8am to ~5pm).
- Emails that constitute bullying, harassment or discrimination against staff contravene the Student Code of Conduct. Emails like this will be reported to the University, and the matter will be pursued as misconduct.
