This course focuses on designing, developing, and articulating a well-structured research proposal. The course provides students with the necessary skills to design a research plan able to address a clear and concise research question. The course requires students to create a comprehensive research plan which includes appropriate methodology, the identification of suitable sampling techniques, data collection, analysis and the dissemination of research findings.

Aims and outcomes
Design, develop, and articulate a well-structured research proposal which incorporates an answerable research question, a research plan, identification of appropriate sampling techniques, and an outline of data collection and analysis.
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
LO1.
Critically evaluate existing literature in a chosen field interpreting research findings accurately, drawing appropriate conclusions, identifying gaps and limitations to provide a nuanced understanding of current knowledge and appropriate research methodologies.
LO2.
Critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different methodological approaches used in studies and assess the implications of these to plan future research.
LO3.
Design, develop, and articulate a well-structured research proposal which incorporates an answerable research question, a research plan, the identification of appropriate sampling techniques, and an outline of data collection and analysis.
LO4.
Demonstrate advanced communication skills to articulate complex ideas clearly, structure arguments logically, and use appropriate academic conventions and referencing styles to effectively present and disseminate research findings.

Task description
For this task, you will develop a research question that has relevance to your program’s discipline (i.e., counselling or social work) and prepare an annotated bibliography of 6-8 studies that are relevant to your research question. Your annotated bibliography will be 2500 words.
The aim of this task is to demonstrate your ability to:
· develop a research question;
· design and conduct a literature search;
· identify relevant research studies; and
· summarise and evaluate those studies, with particular emphasis on methodology.
