Sport is a significant activity, in and of itself, but its real potential is as a gateway to understanding how social and cultural determinants - such as age, ability, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and race - operate in our society to impact knowledge and experiences of physical activity and health. This course prepares students for transition into the workplace by providing the groundwork to understand the complexity of Australian society. Understanding this complexity will enable aspiring professionals to work with clients from different socio-economic backgrounds, sexualities, racial and ethnic communities, and with those who have physical and mental disabilities. This course will generate social and cultural sensitivities to ensure that undergraduates will be optimally prepared to function as capable and competent graduates in a wide range of sport and health vocations through their understanding of society and culture.
This course covers a range of historical and contemporary issues related to sport and physical activity. The issues are selected for their relevance for Human Movement and Nutrition Science students and are intended to provide contextual material on topics ranging from historical and cultural differences in sport and physical activity to contemporary issues involving race, gender, violence, disability, health, and age. The binding theme in this issues-based course is the emphasis on critical and reflective thinking. Students are encouraged to go beyond commonly acceptedᅠunderstandings of sport and to critiqueᅠsporting and physical activity myths.

Deferral or extension
You may be able to apply for an extension.
Extensions for group work assessment may be available and will require a single request submitted with agreement from at least 50% of the members of the group, and recognition of potential impacts on the other group members. Download and complete the form below, and attach this form to your extension request: Extension of Group Assessment - Group Member Acknowledgement (PDF, 144.9 KB)
Student Access Plans for an individual student do not guarantee an extension for the assessment item. Extension Verification Letters cannot be used for group-based assessments and activities.
Dysfunctional group dynamics, poor performance by individual group members, or illness or other issues of a group member are generally not considered sufficient grounds for an extension on submission of a group assessment item. These issues should be actively managed by the group and the Course Coordinator as appropriate, during semester.
If your group is granted an extension, your new presentation date and time will be determined by the course coordinator and communicated to you via your UQ student email account.
Late submission
You will receive a mark of 0 if this assessment is submitted late.
