This course builds on the foundation service management course and examines service management theory in the context of the world's best hospitality and service organisations to better understand service excellence, service orientation and service culture. The course examines leadership at two levels - the individual level (people as leaders) and the organisational level (companies as leaders). Topics include the study of leadership theories and styles, creating a service-oriented organisational culture and values, decision-making, team dynamics, the role of emotions in leadership, and a review of international best practice hospitality organisations. Students will study industry best practice and create their own comprehensive case studies of service excellence in hospitality.

Through the study of leadership theory, an advanced interrogation of critical leadership issues affecting the service sector broadly, numerous leadership self-appraisals, and the integration of a number of invited speakers from industry,ᅠstudents will be exposed to a blend of leadership theories, service leadership practices and leadership self evaluations.

Task description

Students will use the Leadership Compass and the Team Inventory Tools provided to evaluate their own leadership traits, skills and values in a 1000 word reflection.

First, use the Leadership Compass to evaluate your own leadership traits, skills and values. The result of the Leadership Compass will provide a dominant leadership perspective.

Second, complete the Team Inventory to determine your preferences in working with others and making decisions when working in teams.

Once these tools have provided you with results. You will write up a personal reflection that shares your results and an analysis of how, where and when these results have been present in your academic, professional or personal life.

This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT).
