This course provides an introduction to fundamental concepts of the humanities and social sciences that underlie studies and professions as diverse as anthropology, archaeology, criminology, sociology, art history, drama, literature, music, cultural and media studies, classics, philosophy, history, world religions, international relations, political science, communication, journalism and writing. The course examines how these studies advance analytic and original thinking and knowledge about the human and social condition, past and present. Students will develop skills in critical and creative thinking, research and evaluation, argument mapping, problem solving and oral and written communication
The HASS course will provide students with an opportunity to engage and explore wide ranging topics that impact communities, societies, and the world today. Learning activities encourage student participation in analysing ideas and knowledge alongside active learning with site visits, museum and archive viewing and workshops in developing cultural, sensory, and historical literacies. Students will develop professional expertise skills in academic writing and speaking using various disciplinary conventions; conduct research; participate in discussions; work independently and as a group; and create responses that demonstrate reflective learning and creative problem-solving approaches.ᅠ

Aims and outcomes
The aims of the Humanities and Social Sciences course are to:
- Provide students with opportunities to engage with key concepts and principles relating to humanities and social sciences studies and professional expertise
- Develop students’ research, critical thinking and creative thinking skills
- Develop students’ academic writing and speaking skills, ability to work independently and as a group.
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

Apply foundational concepts and principles of the humanities and social sciences using relevant terminology, methods and frameworks
LO2.
Research, select, analyse and evaluate quantitative and qualitative data, discourse and literature, primary and secondary sources, and present information in written and spoken forms on humanities and social sciences topics within academic guidelines and using appropriate technology
LO3.
Critically analyse and evaluate arguments by using argument mapping
LO4.
Employ communication skills to participate and contribute effectively with respect and ethical understanding to discussions and group presentations
LO5.
Reflect on learning and creatively respond to issues in creative arts, cultural and social perspectives, historical topics, and digital humanities
LO6.
Work independently and in groups and organise time effectively to complete assessments within given time frames
LO7.
Consult with the teacher and others for mentoring advice and incorporate feedback into assessments
