This module covers fundamental principles of skin cancer diagnostics. Key content areas include: the normal anatomy, embryology and physiology of the skin, clinical examination for detection of skin malignancy and the effective use of dermatoscopy. Basic dermatopathology is covered with respect to its correlation with dermatoscopy.
This Short Form Credential is designed to provide a sound knowledge base with respect to embryology, micro-anatomy, physiology, oncology, clinical issues, dermatoscopy and dermatopathology,ᅠas they relate to the diagnosisᅠof skin malignancy. Chapters 1-7 of theᅠrequired textbook resource "Dermatoscopy and Skin Cancer" (Rosendahl and Marozava) as well as chapters 1, 4, 7 (pages 67-70) and 9.2ᅠof a course textbook, presented on Learn.UQ in "Learning Resources", set out clearly the didactic material with which you should be familiar. This is to allow you to concentrate on exploring and understanding concepts and issues that are essential if skin malignancies are to be correctly diagnosed and therefore managed appropriately. A very significant emphasis will be placed on dermatoscopic-dermatopathologic correlation as this is fundamental to skin cancer management. A case of melanoma can be expertly assessed and diagnosed but if an erroneous pathology report is not recognised and responded to the expert diagnosis of the clinician can be neutralised. You will be encouraged to relate the material studied to your own current clinical experience and to share this experience with the other students and the Course Coordinator.
Aims and outcomes
To develop a strong clinical knowledge and skill base which can be applied effectively in the practice of skin cancer diagnostics.
