This course covers the core principles of skin cancer medicine and surgery. Key content areas include: the normal anatomy, embryology and physiology of the skin, the biology and pathology of skin cancer as well as both dermatopathology and dermatology relevant to skin cancer management. Risk factors for the development of skin cancer and associated conditions are dealt with, along with their relevance in principles of skin cancer prevention. Skin cancer incidence and mortality are explored in both the Australasian and global context. Basic dermatoscopy is presented along with more advanced aspects including decision algorithms based on revised pattern analysis. Core research principles are defined and elaborated.

IMED7001 is designed to provide a sound knowledge base with respect to embryology, anatomy, physiology, oncology, dermatology, dermatoscopy, dermatopathology, epidemiology and therapeutic modalities as they relate to the diagnosis and management of skin malignancy as well as basic research principles to facilitate critical evaluation of publications. A course textbook (CT), presented on Learn.UQ in "Learning Resources", derived from (referenced) resource material and clinical material provided by the course coordinator, as well as a required textbook, Dermatoscopy and Skin Cancer (Rosendahl and Marozava) set out clearly the didactic material with which you should be familiar. This is to allow you to concentrate on exploring and understanding concepts and issues that are essential if skin malignancies are to be correctly diagnosed and therefore managed appropriately. A very significant emphasis will be placed on dermatoscopic-dermatopathologic correlation as this is fundamental to skin cancer management. A case of melanoma can be expertly assessed and diagnosed but if an erroneous pathology report is not recognised and responded to the expert diagnosis of the clinician can be neutralised.

IMED7001 will prepare you for the other courses in this program and as with all of the courses, you will be encouraged to relate the material studied to your own current clinical experience and to share this experience with the other students and the Course Coordinator.

Course requirements

Assumed background

All doctors, nurses or clinician-scientists enrolled in the UQ Skin Cancer Program need a sound scientific foundation to their clinical knowledge and skills which should be derived from current evidence based medicine. Candidates with a basic medical, nursing or science degree and a minimum of 2 years post-graduate clinical work-experience will be eligible to apply to enrol for the IMED7001 course. Ideally applicants should have clinical experience in skin cancer medicine. Current clinical work performed while doing the MMed (Skin Cancer) course shouldᅠincludeᅠwork in the field of skin cancer diagnostics to help relate the content of this course to current clinical experience.

Additional course grading information

You must pass all assessment tasks in order to pass the course and achieve a minimum aggregate mark of 65%.ᅠPass marks are set for assessment items, however on occasion a recognised standard setting methodᅠmay be used to determine the pass mark.ᅠFailure of a single assessment item will result in a maximum grade of 3 being awarded, failure of two assessment tasks will result in a maximum grade of 2 and failure of all assessment tasks will result in a grade of 1, irrespective of aggregate marks.ᅠ

Calculation of Final Grade

The percentage mark for this course is reached by calculating the weighted average percentage mark achieved across the marked assessment tasks. The total of the weighted assessment tasks for the course will be rounded to two decimal points if required, with the final mathematical rounding to an integer at the end yielding a percentage mark. A mark of x.5% or greater will be rounded up to (x+1)%. A percentage mark of less than x.5% will be rounded down to x%.

Supplementary assessment

Supplementary assessment is available for this course.

Additional assessment information

Please note that all submission dates for assessments are in Brisbane time - Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST).

Deferred examinations

If you are unable to sit or complete a scheduled final examination, you must apply for a deferred examination no later than 5 calendar days after the date the original examination was held. Please see my.UQ for further information on deferred exams. Deferred exams will be held in the Semester 2 deferred and supplementaryᅠexam period.

Learning activities

The learning activities for this course are outlined below. Learn more about the learning outcomes that apply to this course.

Additional learning activity information

All study will be provided by required reading and online learning with the inclusion of a one-hour online compulsory, live virtual classroom group-tutorial each week. The meeting time will be announced on Learn.UQ (Discussion Board) and attendance is compulsory. Students unable to attend are required to watch the recording of the meeting and provide a written summary (approximately 300 words) to verify compliance.

Didactic material is available in the required reading material . Students are expected to study this with an initial reading completed before the due date for submission of the In-Semester Assignment. Other learning resources include recommended text books, and online videos and lectures presented on Learn.UQ (Blackboard).

Material is presented at the beginning of each teaching week in the form of required reading and a Blog. Questions presented on this Blog require responses by due dates as do learning-curve exercises announced on the Blog. These activities are designed to give the student the opportunity to consolidate learning.
