JAPN2021 is a foundational course. It consolidates and extends students' knowledge and abilities to use the structure and vocabulary acquired in JAPN1011 and JAPN1012. Students may take JAPN2021 only, or they may take JAPN2022 in the same semester (if offered). Students who have completed any JAPN3*** coded courses are not eligible to enrol in this course.
JAPN2021 focuses on developing students' vocabulary, oral production, culturally appropriate language and spontaneous conversation related to several themes such as vacation plans, cultural events and health. Students continue to develop cultural understanding through engaging with a foreign language, and hone effective language study strategies for lifelong learning.
The course includes all 4 macro skills but tᅠhe course is designed to focus on comprehension in the skills of speaking and listening.
ᅠLearning resources include textbooks, workbooks, on-line audio materials and interactive multimedia software.
JAPN2021 can be taken either together with or separately from JAPN2022 (if offered).

A student's enrolment in JAPN2021 for which s/he holds incompatible qualifications may be cancelled.
The formal prerequisites for JAPN2021 are noted above. Students who do not fulfil those prerequisites, but who have an equivalent knowledge of Japanese (e.g. from equivalent formal prerequisites gained interstate or overseas, or from residence in a Japanese-speaking country) are permitted to enrol in JAPN2021, but they must consult the course coordinator beforehand. Please also note that enrolment may be refused on the basis of such knowledge or abilities, and enrolment in a different course may be recommended. If a student enrols in a course for which theyᅠhold incompatible qualifications, they may be advised to cancel their enrolment, and continued enrolment may result in a forfeiture of credit for this course. Any misrepresentation on the placement interview may be raised as a misconduct matter.

Task description
To demonstrate your active participation and engagement in this course, you will contribute weekly to your individual Padlet, which will be linked on our Blackboard site. Each week, from WEEK 2 to WEEK 12 you are expected to post a short audio or video recording responding to the weekly prompt. You can:
- Record yourself speaking alone (a monologue)
- OR record a short dialogue with a partner
- OR record a short dialogue with an AI partner
You can do this in class or outside class—but you must upload each recording weekly to the your Padlet.
In WEEK 13, you will:
- Choose your best 3 recordings
- Write a short self-reflection (200–250 words in English)
- Submit these as your final assessment (checked for completion)
The reflection should include:
- What speaking challenges did you face?
- How did your speaking improve over time?
- Which grammar/vocabulary are you now more confident using?
- What would you still like to improve?
Please note that while weekly engagement is expected, your Padlet will be assessed holistically at the end of the semester using the marking rubric available on Blackboard.
Your individual Padlet will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Consistent weekly engagement, as shown by time-stamped posts throughout the semester.
- Responsiveness to prompts, teacher feedback, or classmate contributions.
- Final reflection: timely submission of a well-structured, cohesive English-language reflection (200–250 words).
Reminders:
- Do not wait until the end to record everything! These are weekly tasks to help your Japanese grow gradually.
- You are not graded on accuracy—just for completion and effort.
- Use what we learn in class and keep it simple. Mistakes are okay!
