JAPN2021 is a foundational course. JAPN2022 consolidates and extends students' knowledge and abilities to use the structure and vocabulary acquired in JAPN1011 and JAPN1012. Students can only enrol in this course if they have completed JAPN2021, or are enrolled in JAPN2021 in the same semester as they are enrolled in JAPN2022. Students who have completed any JAPN3*** coded courses are not eligible to enrol in this course.
The focus of the course is on using the written language in daily settings through practical use of the three Japanese scripts in various contexts to enhance linguistic, cultural and social understanding of Japan and its language. Students continue to develop cultural understanding through engaging with a foreign language, and hone effective language study strategies for lifelong learning.
JAPN2022 is the extension of beginners level courses JAPN1011 and JAPN1012.ﾠ This course is designed to further develop solid foundation in basic modern Japanese, focusing on skills ofﾠreading and writing and insights into the socio-cultural aspect of the language.ﾠ It also intends to consolidate students'ﾠknowledge of kanji in both reading and writing. The course includes all 4 macro skills butﾠthe course is designed to focus on reading and writing.ﾠ
Learning resources include textbooks, workbooks, on-line audio and video materials and interactive multimedia software.
JAPN2022 has the compulsory companion course JAPN2021. Successful completion of both courses is the pre-requisite to proceed to the next level of Japanese.
Course requirements
Assumed background
This course is for students who have completed JAPN2021 or equivalent, or are enrolled in JAPN2021 in the same semester as they are enrolled in JAPN2022. Students who do not fulfil those prerequisites, but who have an equivalent knowledge of Japanese (e.g. from equivalent formal prerequisites gained interstate or overseas, or from residence in a Japanese-speaking country) are permitted to enrol in this course if they have been placed here via the online Language Course Placement Advisor.ﾠﾠ
Students who have completed any JAPN3*** coded courses are not eligible to enrol in this course. Please also note that enrolment may be refused on the basis of such knowledge or abilities, and enrolment in a different course may be recommended. If a student enrols in a course for which they hold incompatible qualifications, they may be advised to cancel their enrolment, and continued enrolment may result in a forfeiture of credit for this course. Any misrepresentation in the placement process may be raised as a misconduct matter.ﾠ

Aims and outcomes
In this course we build upon reading and writing skills attained in the first year of Japanese. We focus on using the written language in daily settings through practical use of the three Japanese scripts in various settings to enhance linguistic,ﾠcultural and social understanding of Japan and its language. The course is developed to promote independent and lifelong learning skills.ﾠ
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

communicate in written form in standard Japanese using patterns, script, vocabulary and cultural appropriateness on topics specified in the course content
LO2.
develop strategies for dealing with comprehension and communication difficulties
LO3.
continue to study the language independently using and expanding the basic knowledge studied in the course.

Task description
The online tasks are based on the online modules. View the modules and study the parts of the textbook before completing and submitting the task for each week. The Blackboard platform is used for these tasks. This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT). Students are advised that the use of AI or MT technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
Submission guidelines
This is an online task and must be completed online before the due date before 5pm.
Deferral or extension
You may be able to apply for an extension.
The maximum extension allowed is 7 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.
Each task is available for completion for seven days. This is a weekly series of tasks which students need to complete in order to demonstrate consolidation of content. Maximum extension length allows assessors to give timely feedback before subsequent tasks are due and thus support sequential nature of learning in this course.

The Literacy Task 1 will cover Lessons 8 and 9 inclusive and have both writing and reading components. However, previous study of Japanese in JAPN1011 and JAPN1012 or equivalent will also be necessary to complete the task successfully. The task will be 110 minutes long.

Script is used with a high degree of accuracy. |

In speech and writing the student uses a wide range of vocabulary and structures with accuracy and attempts to use language creatively. Scripts and characters which have been introduced in the course are used with accuracy. |
