In this course, students will learn how to express hopes, wishes, gratitude, and respect appropriately, as well as how to describe hypothetical situations, regrets, and failures. The course will enhance students' communicative skills across the four macro skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) and develop their linguistic, cultural, and critical thinking competencies at the intermediate level.

JAPN3010 is for students in intermediate level, who have completed JAPN2022 or high school Japanese studies. Students who have completed JAPN31** coded and higher level courses are not eligible to enrol in this course.

Introduction to grammar and script follows the content of the GENKI Book II (3rd Edition) and GENKI Workbook II (3rd Edition). Students will develop their use of the four macro skills through participation in a variety of activities during class time and through out-of-class activities. Students will acquire knowledge and culturally adequate attitude to communicate effectively through various forms and expressions in Japanese and develop cultural awareness and sensitivity through deeper understanding of social and cultural aspects of Japanese society reflected and embedded in the language. Students will also build resilience and the ability to learn through self-reflection, interaction with peers and teachers. Full attendance and active participation in classes are encouraged.

Course requirements

Assumed background

Students must complete a Japanese Language Questionnaire through our online Language Course Placement Advisor: https://courseplacements.languages-cultures.uq.edu.au/ when they enrol in the Program. Please use UQ credentials/email to fill in this form. If a student enrols in a course for which they hold incompatible qualifications, they may be advised to cancel their enrolment, and continued enrolment may result in a forfeiture of credit for this course. Any misrepresentation on the placement interview may be raised as a misconduct matter.

Please be reminded that students placed/enrolled in JAPN3010 are not permitted to enrol in JAPN1011 or JAPN1012 or JAPN2021 or JAPN2022 or JAPN3101 or JAPN3500 or any JAPN31xx or JAPN32xx code courses at the same time. Students are also not permitted to backtrack to lower levels in Japanese language studies. Students are advised to check the prerequisites for each course carefully.

For students majoring in the Japanese Advanced Major or the Japanese Advanced Extended Major, JAPN3010 is required if it is their first Japanese language course at UQ. Please note that JAPN3030 and JAPN3040 do not count toward the Advanced Major. It is recommended that students refer to the pathway document.

For students enrolled in the Japanese Major, JAPN3010 is compulsory. They may take JAPN3030 before, concurrently with, or after completing JAPN3010, however, they are not permitted to take JAPN3030 concurrently with JAPN3101 as students enrolled in JAPN3101 are not eligible to take JAPN30xx courses.

Task description

The aim of this assessment is to evaluate the mastery of content studied in this course and the ability to apply it in a real-life situation. Students will deliver a presentation on one of the themes covered in class. The topics will be provided in class and posted on Blackboard approximately three weeks before the presentation.

The task is designed for students to demonstrate their ability to interact in social settings by effectively applying what they have learned in this course. It also provides an opportunity to practise in a simulated real-life situation, engaging in information exchange and negotiation, including in formal settings.

This is an individual task, and the duration of the assessment will be approximately 8 minutes.

For the task, students are required to deliver a formal presentation (3-4 minutes) in Japanese to examiners, who will role-play as guests, clients, or other relevant participants. A Q&A session will follow the presentation.

Students are required to:

  • Choose one of the topics provided.
  • Collect relevant information from the internet, books, newspapers, journals, magazines, etc. Students may use any UQ referencing style, provided it is applied consistently.
  • Create presentation materials using PowerPoint.
  • Submit their presentation materials via Blackboard
