In this course, students will learn ways of expressing opinions, complaints, reminiscences about the past; speaking modestly about oneself; asking for and giving advice; reporting incidents; instructing people to do things; and making resolutions. The course will enhance students' communicative competence in the four macro skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) and develop linguistic, cultural competency and critical thinking appropriate for intermediate level. JAPN3020 is for students in intermediate level and continues on from JAPN3010. Students who have completed JAPN31** coded and higher-level courses are not eligible to enrol in this course.

Introduction to grammar and script follows the content of the GENKI Book II (3rd Edition) and GENKI Workbook II (3rd Edition). Students will develop their use of the four macro skills through participation in a variety of activities during class time and through out-of-class activities. Students will acquire knowledge and culturally adequate attitudes to communicate effectively through various forms and expressions in Japanese and develop cultural awareness and sensitivity through deeper understanding of social and cultural aspects of Japanese society reflected and embedded in the language. Students will also build resilience and the ability to learn through self-reflection, interaction with peers and teachers. Full attendance and active participation in classes are encouraged.

Course requirements

Assumed background

This course is for students who have completed JAPN2101 or JAPN3010 or equivalent. Students new to Japanese at UQ must complete a Japanese Language Questionnaire through our online Language Course Placement Advisor: https://courseplacements.languages-cultures.uq.edu.au/. Please use UQ credentials/email to fill in this form.

Please also note that enrolment may be refused on the basis of such knowledge or abilities, and enrolment in a different course may be recommended. If a student enrols in a course for which they hold incompatible qualifications, they may be advised to cancel their enrolment, and continued enrolment may result in a forfeiture of credit for this course. Any misrepresentation in the placement process may be raised as a misconduct matter.

Students who do not fulfil those prerequisites, but who have an equivalent knowledge of Japanese (e.g. from equivalent formal prerequisites gained interstate or overseas, or from residence in Japan) are permitted to enrol in this course if they have been placed here via the online Language Course Placement Advisor.
