JAPN3030 is for students in intermediate level who have completed JAPN2022 or high school Japanese studies. Students can take this course before, concurrently, or after the recommended companion course JAPN3010. Students who have completed JAPN31** coded and higher level courses are not eligible to enrol in this course.
The course builds on students' knowledge and ability to use fundamental structures in Japanese and assists them in increasing competencies in using Japanese for functional communication. It covers the language needed to describe experiences and events and future plans and to give reasons and explanations. Students learned pragmatic skills and cultural knowledge associated with grammatical structures.

Course requirements

Assumed background

This course is for students who have completed JAPN2022 or high school Japanese studies or equivalent. Students new to Japanese at UQ must complete a Japanese Language Questionnaire through our online Language Course Placement Advisor: https://courseplacements.languages-cultures.uq.edu.au/

Students who do not fulfil those prerequisites, but who have an equivalent knowledge of Japanese (e.g. from equivalent formal prerequisites gained interstate or overseas, or from residence in a Japanese-speaking country) are permitted to enrol in this course if they have been placed here via the online Language Course Placement Advisor.  Please also note that on the basis of such knowledge or abilities, enrolment in a different course may be recommended. If a student enrols in a course for which they hold incompatible qualifications, they may be advised to cancel their enrolment. Any misrepresentation in the placement process may be raised as a misconduct matter.

Prerequisites

You'll need to complete the following courses before enrolling in this one:

JAPN2022 or Queensland Year 12 Japanese (or equivalent)

Incompatible

You can't enrol in this course if you've already completed the following:

JAPN1020, JAPN3002

Course staff

Course coordinator

Lecturer

Timetable

The timetable for this course is available on the UQ Public Timetable.

Additional timetable information

We encourage regular in-person attendance throughout the semester. You can only enrol in the course if you can attend classes on the St Lucia campus. No class will be recorded for later viewing. Class participation is the key to success in this course. If you are unable to attend classes due to a time clash etc., we do not recommend taking this course.ᅠ

This course follows The University of Queensland semester-based calendar for all students. If you are a cross-institutional student, please check the UQ exam period dates, which might not coincide with those at your home university.

Public holidays

Alternative arrangements for affected students will be announced through the Blackboard site.

Class allocation

In order to optimise the student experience, it may be necessary to reallocate students to a different class from their first choice. Before this happens, every effort will be made to enable students to voluntarily change into an alternative class that is suitable. Please note: Teaching staff do not have access to the timetabling system to help with class allocation. Therefore, should you need help with your timetable and/or allocation of classes, please ensure you email hass.mytimetable@uq.edu.au from your UQ student email account with the following details:

  • Full name,
  • Student ID, and
  • the Course Code

Additional information and support can be found here .

Aims and outcomes

The course seeks to build upon students’ foundation in Japanese, enabling them to further their language skills to advance to the intermediate and higher levels. The course helps students prepare for ‘real-life’ language use in situations.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

LO1.

Communicate in both spoken and written Japanese on course-related topics, using appropriate patterns, vocabulary, script, and culturally appropriate expressions.

LO2.

Use patterns, script, and vocabulary taught in the course to communicate on new topics and ideas.

LO3.

Comprehend variation in Japanese language use and the diversity of its users across social, regional, and cultural contexts.

LO4.

Reflect on and respond to feedback on your written and spoken Japanese, and use this to improve your proficiency.

Task description

All students who have not completed JAPN2022 at UQ are required to demonstrate that they have been correctly placed in JAPN3030. The link for the placement questionnaire is here

Students who have completed the prerequisite course JAPN2022 are not required to retake the questionnaire.

Use of AI / MT in this assessment

Completion of this Language Placement Questionnaire is a compliance hurdle requirement in many courses. This requirement aims to ensure that you are placed in the most appropriate language course based on your current level of linguistic proficiency. Your responses, along with the possible submission of short writing or speaking sample, help us match you to a course that aligns with your previous (formal or informal) language learning experiences.

While this is an unsupervised, individual online task, it is not in your best interest to use generative AI tools. If the work you submit does not reflect your actual language ability, you may be placed in a course that is not appropriate for your level, which could negatively affect your learning and performance. This may also be considered an act of student misconduct under the UQ Student Code of Conduct due to the misrepresentation of your capabilities.

Hurdle requirements

Placement via this placement questionnaire is a hurdle requirement. Failure to complete this hurdle requirement will result in a maximum grade of 3 for the course. No assessment items will be marked until this is completed.

Submission guidelines

Completed online: https://courseplacements.languages-cultures.uq.edu.au/

Deferral or extension

You cannot defer or apply for an extension for this assessment.

Students who are not able to meet the due date due to late enrolment, must contact the Course Coordinator as soon as possible to ensure they comply with this requirement.

Task description

Worksheets are designed to assist students’ continuous and active learning. Students will be given worksheets with various types of questions. The worksheets are integrated into class activities; we may go over the questions and provide model answers to the questions, and you may receive spontaneous feedback. Working on these questions is an essential part of class activities.

There will be 10 worksheets worth 3% each available throughout the semester. However, please note that only the best 7 of the 10 worksheets will be counted towards the student’s grade. This means that students can miss 3 submissions.

All worksheets must be original content (i.e. not content used in other courses).

Worksheets will be distributed in hard copy in Tutorial 1 (the first tutorial of the week). Students are required to work on the worksheet in class as a part of class activities, and then take them home to review, edit and complete by the specified due date.

The worksheets will be also available on Blackboard in the assessment folder, for students to download and complete independently if they miss class.

Use of AI / MT in this assessment

This task has been designed to be challenging, authentic and complex. Whilst students may use AI and/or MT technologies, successful completion of assessment in this course will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance. A failure to reference generative AI or MT use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct. To pass this assessment, students will be required to demonstrate detailed comprehension of their written submission independent of AI and MT tools.

Submission guidelines

Submit on Blackboard. Students must handwrite the answers on worksheets in Japanese using pens, pencils, and erasers. Upon completion, they should scan the required pages in the portrait direction (e.g., using the Scanner app or scanner) and upload the scanned document in PDF format to the appropriate link in the “Worksheets” folder in the Assessment section of Blackboard. Worksheets that are typed rather than handwritten do not meet the assessment requirements.

Deferral or extension

You cannot defer or apply for an extension for this assessment.

This is a weekly task (due on the dates provided). Worksheets are available for eight days before the due date and only the best 7 marks of the 10 worksheets will be counted towards the student’s grade. Timely completion of these worksheets is essential to support the sequence of content covered in class. General feedback and revision instructions will be addressed in class.

Late submission

A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.

Task description

Students will present a conversational dialogue for 3 minutes in Japanese on one or two topics. This assessment is completed in person.

An examiner will play a partner role in the dialogue. At the onset of the presentation, students will be given a card that shows conversational settings to perform and information to include in their presentation. Students will be given 2 minutes of perusal time. The presentation should include, but not be limited to, a set of the language covered in Chapters 1, 2, and 3, which is suitable for use in the presentation to demonstrate their understanding of course content and as well as their capacity to use the language creatively. Students should also use the language structures covered in the previous chapters if they fit their dialogues. After the dialogue presentation, the examiner will ask some questions in Japanese relating to the presentation for approximately 1-2 minutes. Therefore, this assessment will be approximately 7 minutes in total per student.

Important Notes

The presentation should not be read from a script—it should be presented at a natural speed, spoken in a way that conveys meaning. This is a closed-book assessment item. You are not allowed to use reference materials. Your work must be authentic; that is, receiving help from others is prohibited.

Marking

Students' oral performance will be assessed based on content, delivery, and language, such as pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar (accuracy, variety & complexity of sentence structures). Please see the marking rubric on Blackboard.

Students with Alternative Exam Adjustments in place should contact the Course Coordinator directly and apply through Unitask to activate them for this assessment.

Whilst students may use AI and/or MT technologies in preparation, successful completion of assessment in this course will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance.A failure to reference generative AI or MT use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

The use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT) tools in the in-person component of this assessment will not be permitted. Any attempted use of AI or MT may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Submission guidelines

Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

The maximum extension allowed is 14 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

The maximum extension length (14 calendar days) ensures that assessors can provide timely feedback, supporting the progressive, sequential, and cumulative nature of language learning that underpins this course.
