This is an advanced level course, and continues on from JAPN3020 and the other intermediate level courses.
JAPN3101 covers themes such as different written styles and expressions in particular context. It will extend students' knowledge and skills in Japanese languages in all four macro skills and develop linguistic and cultural competency, focussing on advanced grammar and written communication.

This is an advanced Japanese language course with an emphasis on mastering kanjiᅠfor daily useᅠand advanced grammar for written communication. JAPN3101 and JAPN3102 are one set, and the same textbook is used continuously.ᅠ

Course requirements

Assumed background

This course is for students completing a Japanese Major (single) and Advanced Japanese Major (single and extended). Students who have backgrounds other than the prerequisite courses at UQ must complete a Japanese Language Questionnaire through our online Language Course Placement Advisor: https://courseplacements.languages-cultures.uq.edu.au/. Placement in a course is not confirmed until this is done. If a student is enrolled in a course that is incompatible with their Japanese learning background and has not completed a Japanese Language Questionnaire, they may have their enrolment in a course cancelled. This is likely to involve forfeiture of credit and students will be liable for any fees for the course.

Task description

Students are required to demonstrate their understanding of Japanese vocabulary by providing meanings and readings, constructing sentences using specific grammar points, translating sentences into English, and composing a short passage in Japanese on a given topic. All responses must be handwritten, without the use of any supporting materials, such as dictionaries.

All students must complete these Review Questions about the answers during the tutorial in W1. It is a hurdle requirement. If students are absent in W1, this task may be completed the following week. Assessment items will not be marked until the student completes this assessment task.

STATEMENT ON AI & MT

This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT). Students are advised that the use of AI or MT technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Hurdle requirements

It is a hurdle requirement. If students were absent in W1, it will be conducted in the following week. Assessment items will not be marked until the student completes the Review Questions and Consultation.

Task description

Task: Write five sentences in Japanese using ten different kanji from the Kanji List. (Please note that not all 熟語 in the online module appear in the Kanji List.)

  • Each sentence must include two different kanji from the Kanji List.
  • You must use the compounds and/or verbs that are listed in the section of 熟語・動詞 in the Kanji List.
  • The length of one sentence must be longer than ten字.
  • Underline the kanji you chose from the list.
  • It must be handwritten.
  • Must use the template (available at Blackboard).

Each assignment has an additional requirement:

  • Assignment 1: Useです・ます体
  • Assignment 2: Useだ・である体
  • Assignment 3: Sentence ending must be 過去形
  • Assignment 4: Sentence ending must be 否定形
  • Assignment 5: Sentence ending must be 疑問形

Submission:

Submit the assignment as a PDF file at Blackboard (Assessment) by due the dates. Submission will be open at 9am Wednesday of the due week. The file should be named as: JAPN3101 Kanji 1 (or 2, 3, 4, 5)_Your name.

You must write five entries (five different dates). The length of each entry is 100 - 120 ji including punctuation.

Nominate three objectives (in English) you want to achieve through diary writing. Objectives should be concrete and realistic, and they should be related to linguistic aspects, topics, or writing style etc, but not about submission or mark (e.g., “Making no mistake” or “Submit every time” is not considered as an objective.). One objective must be 20-50 words (If shorter than 20 words, it will not be marked.

Diary must be handwritten horizontally (横書き). Each entry must present the writer’s experience, reflection and/or observation on the day.

Write your original or revised objectives (20-50 words each) and evaluate your achievement against each objective in English (70-100 words each) through diary writing (Parts 1 & 2).

* If you were advised to revise the objective in Dairy 1 and did not revise it, your evaluation will not be marked.
