This is an advanced level course, and follows on from JAPN3101.
JAPN3102 covers themes such as learner identity and multilingualism in Australia and Japan. This course will extend students' knowledge and skills in Japanese languages in all four macro skills and develop linguistic and cultural competency with an emphasis on mastering kanji and advanced grammar for written communication.
This course is compulsory for students of Advanced Japanese major. JAPN3102 is prerequisite forJAPN32XX and JAPN3500.
Course requirements
Assumed background
This course is for students who have completed JAPN3101 or equivalent. Students new to Japanese at UQ must complete a Japanese Language Questionnaire through our online Language Course Placement Advisor: https://courseplacements.languages-cultures.uq.edu.au/.ᅠStudents who do not fulfil those prerequisites, but who have an equivalent knowledge of Japanese (e.g. from equivalent formal prerequisites gained interstate or overseas, or from residence in a Japanese-speaking country) are permitted to enrol in this course if they have been placed here via the online Language Course Placement Advisor.ᅠStudents who have completed JAPN32** coded courses or JAPN3500 are not eligible to enrol in this course. Please also note that enrolment may be refused on the basis of such knowledge or abilities, and enrolment in a different course may be recommended. If a student enrols in a course for which they hold incompatible qualifications, they may be advised to cancel their enrolment, and continued enrolment may result in a forfeiture of credit for this course. Any misrepresentation in the placement process may be raised as a misconduct matter.ᅠ

Task description
Students submit the tutorial worksheet at the end of tutorial (W1).
Students are given a worksheet in the class as part of class activities. The worksheet is collected at the end of the class. It must be handwritten.
This assessment task is to be completed in-person. The use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT) tools will not be permitted. Any attempted use of AI or MT may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
Submission guidelines
Submit the worksheet at the end of the tutorial class.
Deferral or extension
You may be able to apply for an extension.
The maximum extension allowed is 14 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.
Students who were not able to attend the class due to illness will be given the worksheet in W2 to complete the task.
Late submission
A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.
Please note that the penalty for late submission without prior approval rule only applies to students who actually attended the class and participated in activities but failed to submit it in class.

Task description
Write five sentences in Japanese using ten different kanji from the Kanji List. (Please note that not all 熟語 in the online module appear in the Kanji List.)
- Each sentence must include two different kanji from the Kanji List.
- You must use the compounds and/or verbs that are listed in the section of 熟語・動詞 in the Kanji List.
- The length of one sentence must be longer than ten字.
- Underline the kanji you chose from the list.
- It must be handwritten.
- Must use the template (available in Blackboard).
Each assignment has an additional requirement:
- Assignment 6: Useです・ます体.
- Assignment 7: Useだ・である体.
- Assignment 8: Sentence ending must be 過去形.
- Assignment 9: Sentence ending must be 否定形.
- Assignment 10: Sentence ending must be 疑問形.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Translation (MT) provides emerging tools that may support students in completing this assessment task. Students may appropriately use AI and/or MT in completing this assessment task. Students must clearly reference any use of AI or MT in each instance.
A failure to reference generative AI or MT use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Task description
After reading the given text, write your response in Japanese including your own experience to support your view. Your writing must have a title. You can write vertically or horizontally, and it must be typed. The length of writing is 800-1,000字 including a title.
Sample works of previous students are available in Blackboard for your reference. Among the submitted writings, two will be chosen as texts to respond for the next submission.
This task has been designed to be challenging, authentic and complex. Whilst students may use AI and/or MT technologies, successful completion of assessment in this course will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance. A failure to reference generative AI use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct. To pass this assessment, students will be required to demonstrate detailed comprehension of their written submission independent of AI tools.
