This course focuses on reading and writing in Korean for students with no prior knowledge of the Korean language. It includes a structural analysis of contemporary modern Korean, expressions used on social networking sites (SNS), and key grammatical patterns. These skills will enable students to navigate various situations, including social interactions and workplace settings. The teaching materials will also incorporate relevant cultural features throughout the course.

The Summer Semester in-person or external course offering may be cancelled unless a minimum of 20 students enrol. If both offerings have fewer than 20 students, the course may be cancelled.

Introduction for a solid foundation in basic modern Korean in grammar, reading and writing skills. Open to students with no previous experience of Korean.

KORN1011 assumes no prior knowledge of Korean.

  • If students have learnt Korean elsewhere, or if ᅠthey are ᅠKorean background students,ᅠ they must haveᅠ a placement test
  • KORN1011 is a course starting at A1 level on the CEFR language proficiency scale, and enabling you to reach a high A1 level.

Aims and outcomes

KORN1011 is designed to develop practical skills in reading and writing. This course will introduce some fundamental grammatical structures of the Korean language and focus on reading and writing practices that occur in everyday life. In addition, this course will help students enhance their language-learning strategies and diverse intercultural knowledge, which are helpful for their future work-related settings and for understanding people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Task description

Individual results and general feedback are provided within two weeks. Maximum extension length allows assessors to give timely feedback before subsequent tasks are due.

Late submission

A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.

General Information

  • This exam consists of 30 multiple-choice questions (Part A) and two handwriting tasks (Part B and C).
  • Duration: 80 minutes, no reading time
  • No extra time will be allowed for late students. 
  • The written exam may include the following tasks: grammatical skills (e.g., correcting particles and grammatical errors), rearranging dialogue, jumbled sentences, matching, writing a short essay, multiple-choice or T/F questions, and reading comprehension.

Task description

General Information

  • The two-hour exam (with 10 minutes of reading time) will be scheduled during the regular exam period.
  • The goal of the final exam is to assess students' overall understanding of the Korean language skills taught in this course, with a particular focus on writing and reading.
  • The exam will cover writing essays (or short paragraphs) and answering reading comprehension questions. 
  • The exam may include the following tasks: selecting correct particles/markers, gap-filling tasks, reading comprehension tasks, writing appropriate responses to questions in Korean, translation tasks from Korean to English/English to Korean, writing an essay in Korean, conversation construction tasks based on scenarios given, and choosing the correct grammatical points.
  • Preparation guidelines and marking criteria will be available on Blackboard.

Course grade description: The student is unable to use most basic script nor form sentences in written and reading Korean. S/he is generally unintelligible in written and reading Korean.

2 (Fail) 25 - 44

Minimal evidence of achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: The student demonstrates little or no understanding of written or reading Korean. Written Korean is extremely limited in range of structures and vocabulary, with frequent errors in use of characters.

3 (Marginal Fail) 45 - 49

Demonstrated evidence of developing achievement of course learning outcomes

Course grade description: The student demonstrates a limited understanding of reading and written Korean. There are frequent errors in both reading comprehension and writing and in use of characters.

4 (Pass) 50 - 64

Demonstrated evidence of functional achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: Comprehension of written and reading Korean is generally good but details may be missed or misunderstood. The student tends to use formulaic expressions rather than original utterances and uses a narrow range of vocabulary. Script, vocabulary and structures are mostly used with accuracy; however, errors will occasionally affect meaning.

5 (Credit) 65 - 74

Demonstrated evidence of proficient achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: The student understands most written and reading Korean when vocabulary and structures which are introduced in the course are used. The student attempts to use a range of characters, vocabulary and structures, with occasional attempts at creativity. While errors occur, they do not on the whole affect meaning.

6 (Distinction) 75 - 84

Demonstrated evidence of advanced achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: The studentᅠunderstands written and reading Korean well when vocabulary and structures that are introduced in the course are used. In reading comprehension and writing, the student uses a range of vocabulary and structures, although the accuracy of use fluctuates. Creative use of language may often be attempted. Characters are used with a high degree of accuracy.

7 (High Distinction) 85 - 100

Demonstrated evidence of exceptional achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: The student is always able to understand both written and reading Korean when vocabulary and structures which are introduced in the course are used. In reading comprehension and writing the student uses a wide range of vocabulary and structures with accuracy and attempts to use language creatively. Characters that have been introduced in the course are used with accuracy.
