This course focuses on reading and writing in Korean for students with no prior knowledge of Korean language. The course includes structural analysis of modern Korean and important grammatical patterns. Writing exercises and relevant cultural features will be emphasized throughout the course.
The course is designed to achieve a solid foundation in basic modern Korean, focusing on the development ofᅠreading and writing skills. Students learn the basic functions and associated grammar and vocabulary, which will enable them to respond to various situations such as social lives and work-related places.

Assumed background
- If students have learnt Korean elsewhere they must have a placement test.
- All Korean background speakers must have a placement interview with the coordinator prior to enrolment.
- KORN1011 assumes no prior knowledge of Korean. Please also note that enrolments may be refused on the basis of such knowledge or abilities, and enrolment in a different course may be recommended.
- KORN 1011 is a course starting at A1 level on the CEFR language proficiency scale, and enabling you to reach a high A1 level.

In weeks 1, 2, and 3, there are two Contacts per day (a 1-hour Contact and a 2-hour Contact), held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons. In week 4, there are two Contacts per day (a 1-hour Contact and a 2-hour Contact), held on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

Aims and outcomes
KORN1011 is designed to develop practical skills in reading and writing. This course will introduce some fundamental grammatical structures of the Korean language and focus on reading and writing practices that occur in everyday life. In addition, this course will help students enhance their language-learning strategies and diverse intercultural knowledge, which are helpful for their future work-related settings and for understanding people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

The maximum extension allowed is 14 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.
Only a 14-calendar-day extension is allowed for this assessment task, as demonstrating consolidation of knowledge is required to progress with the course's learning sequence. Individual results and general feedback are provided within two weeks. Maximum extension length allows assessors to give timely feedback before subsequent tasks are due.
Late submission
A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.

Task description
Written Exam
- This exam consists of 30 online multiple-choice questions (Questions 1–30) and two handwriting tasks (Questions 31–32).
- For the first part of the exam, you must log in to Blackboard and click on the “KORN1011 Written Exam (Questions 1–30)” on Blackboard.
- For the second part of the exam, you must handwrite your answers to the questions displayed on Blackboard on separate answer sheets and submit them to Blackboard.
- The separate answer sheets for the handwriting tasks will be released on Blackboard prior to the exam. You need to print out the answer sheets and bring them to handwrite on the exam day. Alternatively, you can download the answer sheets to a tablet that supports handwriting functions, such as an iPad, and handwrite on the device during the exam.
- Throughout the entire duration of the exam, you must have your camera on in the Zoom meeting room (the virtual background function on Zoom is not allowed). You must also keep your Zoom camera on while uploading the handwriting task sheets.
- If you encounter any difficulties uploading the answer sheets, please email the lecturer immediately.
- Ensure that the handwritten answer sheets are clearly readable (i.e., make sure the scan is clear). Any illegible submissions will require a re-submission.

- For the submission of the first part of the exam (Questions 1–30), which consists of online-multiple-choice questions, you need to click the “Save and Submit” button on Blackboard once you have completed it.
- For the submission of the second part of the exam (Questions 31–32), which involves handwriting tasks, you must take clear photos or scan your answer sheets once you’re finished. Afterword, you need to combine the photos/scans into ONE PDF file (e.g., insert all photos into one .docx file, then save it as a PDF), and submit it via “SUBMISSION: Written Exam Answer Sheets” on Blackboard.
- You must complete the submission for both the first part and second part within 15 minutes after the exam has ended.

Final Exam
- This final examination may include selecting correct particles/markers, gap-filling tasks, reading comprehension tasks, writing appropriate responses to questions in Korean, translation tasks from Korean to English/English to Korean, writing a passage in Korean, conversation construction tasks based on scenarios given, and choosing the correct grammatical points.
- The exam paper will be released on Blackboard on the exam day.
- You must handwrite your answers to the questions on separate answer sheets and submit them to Blackboard.
