This course builds upon the foundation laid in KORN1010 to further enhance students’ communicative competence in Korean. Emphasising oral and aural proficiency, it engages students in interactive pair and group activities that foster active language use. Learners will expand their knowledge of essential vocabulary and acquire more complex grammatical structures beyond those covered in KORN1010, reflecting authentic usage in contemporary Korean society. Through structured speaking exercises, listening comprehension, and culturally informed dialogue, students will develop the skills to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts, including professional settings.

This course is a continuation of KORN1010, designed for spoken communication skills. Open to students with basic communication skills learnt through KORN1010 and KORN1011.

Course requirements

Assumed background

The formal prerequisite for KORN2020 is KORN1010 ᅠand the recommended prerequisite is KORN1011. Students who enrol in KORN2020 ᅠare expected to have completed the prerequisite (i.e., KORN1010) and may have completed the recommended prerequisite (i.e., KORN1011). Students who do not fulfil the prerequisites, but who have equivalent knowledge of Korean (e.g. from equivalent formal prerequisites gained interstate or overseas, or from the residence in Korea) are required to consult the course coordinator beforehand. Please note that on the basis of such knowledge or abilities, enrolment in a different course may be recommended. If a student enrols in a course for which they hold incompatible qualifications, they may be advised to cancel their enrolment. Any misrepresentation on the placement interview may be raised as a misconduct matter.

If students have learnt Korean elsewhere or if they are Korean background students, they must complete a placement test.ᅠ

Guidelines for Using Generative AI (Gen AI) in Assignments

If you use Gen AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Google Gemini, etc.) in your assignments, you are required to submit both your original draft and the version that has been processed using Gen AI tools.

Additionally, you must acknowledge that you used generative AI in the submitted assessment, including where you have directly quoted or paraphrased generative AI content or used tools to summarise readings, brainstorm ideas, plan your process, or for editing or proofreading purposes.

To meet this requirement, you must submit an assignment coversheet.

The cover sheet should include the following information:

  • The Gen AI system used (e.g., Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini)
  • A description of how the tool was utilised (e.g., editing, correcting, translating, planning, brainstorming)
  • The specific prompt(s) used
  • The part, section, or page of the assignment where the tool was applied
  • The date of use

For further details and an example coversheet, please refer to this link: https://guides.library.uq.edu.au/referencing/generative-ai-tools-assignments.

Statement on AI & MT

This task has been designed to be challenging, authentic and complex. Whilst students may use AI and/or MT technologies, successful completion of assessment in this course will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance. A failure to reference generative AI or MT use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct. To pass this assessment, students will be required to demonstrate detailed comprehension of their written submission independent of AI and MT tools.

Course grading

Full criteria for each grade is available in the Assessment Procedure.

Grade Cut off Percent Description
1 (Low Fail) 0 - 24

Absence of evidence of achievement of course learning outcomes.

2 (Fail) 25 - 44

Minimal evidence of achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: The student never uses communication strategies and demonstrates little or no understanding of written or spoken Korean. Demonstrated evidence of functional achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: The student does not use communication strategies effectively. Comprehension of written and spoken Korean is generally good, but details may be missed or misunderstood. The student's pronunciation is generally comprehensible, but some lapses occur. The student tends to use formulaic expressions rather than original utterances and uses a narrow range of vocabulary. Script, vocabulary and structures are mostly used with accuracy; however, errors will occasionally affect meaning.

5 (Credit) 65 - 74

Demonstrated evidence of proficient achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: The student occasionally uses effective communication strategies and understands most written and spoken Korean when vocabulary and structures which are introduced in the course are used. The student's pronunciation is generally comprehensible, but some lapses occur. Fluency is subject to fluctuation. The student attempts to use a range of characters, vocabulary and structures, with occasional attempts at creativity. While errors occur, they do not on the whole affect meaning.

6 (Distinction) 75 - 84

Demonstrated evidence of advanced achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: The student occasionally uses effective communication strategies and understands written and spoken Korean well when vocabulary and structures which are introduced in the course are used. The student uses comprehensible pronunciation and generally responds fluently and appropriately. In speech and writing the student uses a range of vocabulary and structures although accuracy of use fluctuates. Creative use of language may often be attempted. Characters are used with a high degree of accuracy.

7 (High Distinction) 85 - 100

Demonstrated evidence of exceptional achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: The student effectively uses communication strategies and is always able to understand both written and spoken Korean when vocabulary and structures which are introduced in the course are used. The student uses consistently comprehensible pronunciation and responds fluently, appropriately and confidently. In speech and writing the student uses a wide range of vocabulary and structures with accuracy and attempts to use language creatively.
