This course consolidates work done in KORN1011 to improve reading and writing skills by providing further new words including compound words. The course will improve students' understanding of Korean sentence structure and grammar and enhance students' ability to translate between the two languages (Korean/English).
KORN2022 is designed to develop a solid foundation of mainly reading, writing skills and grammatical skills, partially speaking and listening skills and additionally, insight into the socio-cultural aspects of the language. This course is a continuation of KORN1011.

Assumed background
The formal prerequisiteᅠfor KORN2022 is KORN1011 and the recommended prerequitieᅠis KORN1010. Students who enrol KORN2022ᅠare expected to complete the prerequisites (i.e., KORN1011) and/or the recommended prerequisite (i.e., KORN1010). Students who do not fulfil theᅠprerequisites, but who have equivalent knowledge of Koreanᅠ(e.g. from equivalent formal prerequisites gained interstate or overseas, or from the residence in Korea) are required to consult the course coordinator beforehand.
Please also note that enrolments may be refused on the basis of such knowledge or abilities, and enrolment in a different course may be recommended.
If students have learnt Korean elsewhere or if they are Korean background students, they must haveᅠa placement test.ᅠ

Aims and outcomes
This course aims at developing students’ high introductory level of Korean, mainly in writing, reading and cultural competence in high A1 on the CEFR language proficiency scale. By offering language learning in Korean in a global context, this course aims to expand students’ worldviews and offers opportunities for students to develop intercultural communication skills and intercultural perspectives. Thus, students are supported in their employability journey through the opportunity to compare their learning of Korean in the global context cross-culturally.ᅠ

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

Develop knowledge on a high introductory level of Korean grammar, structures, and vocabulary.
LO2.
Write guided short essays with familiar topics using a high introductory-level Korean grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structures.
LO3.
Read, comprehend and understand a high introductory level of written texts in Korean and cultural perspectives of Korea.
LO4.
Develop a high introductory level of understanding of the different aspects of the Korean culture within a global context embedded in the written form of the Korean language.
LO5.
Expand the knowledge and resilience acquired in class to communicate effectively across cultures and to develop intercultural communication skills in a literacy aspect.

Task description

- Producing appropriate expression on the basis of the information cue provided

You may be able to apply for an extension.
The maximum extension allowed is 14 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.
Only a 14-calendar-day extension is allowed for this assessment task, as demonstrating consolidation of knowledge is required to progress with the course's learning sequence. Individual results and general feedback are provided within two weeks. Maximum extension length allows assessors to give timely feedback before subsequent tasks are due.
Late submission
A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.

Task description

The two-hour exam will be scheduled during the regular exam period.
The goal of the End-of-semester exam is to test students' overall understanding of the Korean language skills (especially writing and reading) taught in this course.
The End-of-semester exam may include the following tasks:
- Completion of dialogue
- Writing an essay
- Filling in the blanks
- Completion of short conversations
- Answering the questions given in Korean

Script, vocabulary and structures are mostly used with accuracy; however, errors will occasionally affect meaning. |

Course grade description: The student occasionally uses effective communication strategies in written form and understands most written Korean when vocabulary and structures which are introduced in the course are used. The student attempts to use a range of characters, vocabulary and structures, with occasional attempts at creativity. While errors occur, they do not on the whole affect meaning. |

Course grade description: The student occasionally uses effective communication strategies in written form and understands written Korean well when vocabulary and structures which are introduced in the course are used. Characters are used with a high degree of accuracy. |

In writing the student uses a wide range of vocabulary and structures with accuracy and attempts to use language creatively. Characters which have been introduced in the course are used with accuracy. |

All assignments submitted should be the work of the student and the student alone. This means that students are NOT to seek outside help (from other students, teachers, private tutors, native speakers, Gen AI, machine translation, etc) in preparing assignments. If students are having difficulties in completing their assignments, they should see their tutor during consultation hours or by appointment. Students suspected of having received outside help will be referred to the School of Languages and Cultures Integrity Officer.
