This course focuses on Low B1 level (Independent User) on CEFR language proficiency scale, especially on developing aural/oral skills (listening and speaking) of Korean language up to High B1 level (Independent User), while maintaining the balance in the development of speaking/listening, reading, writing, and cultural competence. It introduces real life situations in the Korean context and provides intercultural communication skills through the study of adapted and authentic texts. This course introduces students to a range of new language elements through various topics and real-life language situations in the Korean context. Some of the topics are also discussed in cross-cultural comparison with Australia as well as other countries when applicable. In that way, students are supported in their employability opportunities.

KORN3010 is an intermediate-level course aimed at improving oral and aural skills in Modern Korean language, while also developing reading, writing, and (inter)cultural competence to enhance employability. As a continuation of KORN3005, this course builds on the communication skills acquired in KORN3005. It is highly recommended to take KORN3011 concurrently to further develop reading and writing skills.

Grade Cut off Percent Description
1 (Low Fail) 0 - 24

Absence of evidence of achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: A student awarded this grade has not completed the required assessment items. You have failed to satisfy any of the objectives of the course.

2 (Fail) 25 - 44

Minimal evidence of achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: A student awarded this grade has not completed the required assessment items. Speaking, writing and cultural competence is highly simplified. You have failed to satisfy most of the basic objectives of the course.

3 (Marginal Fail) 45 - 49

Demonstrated evidence of developing achievement of course learning outcomes

Course grade description: Speaking, writing and cultural competence show an extremely narrow range of structures and expressions with frequent errors. Speech and writing are simplified; often one word responses with little initiation. You have completed most of the required assessment items, but have not satisfied the required level of achievement.

4 (Pass) 50 - 64

Demonstrated evidence of functional achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: Some familiar vocabulary and grammar is used although frequent errors are made. Some simple linking words are used, but meaning as a whole is fragmented. Pronunciation hinders some communication. There is sufficient accuracy to enable some details to be understood. Spoken communication relies heavily on prompts and cues; responses are hesitant, repetitive and rehearsed. Some non verbal feature are used.

5 (Credit) 65 - 74

Demonstrated evidence of proficient achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: A range of familiar vocabulary and grammar is used effectively with some errors. Basic cohesive devices are used to connect simple ideas. Pronunciation may be affected by first language but is comprehensible to a background speaker. Where a variety of structures are used, the essential meaning is clear, although there may be frequent errors. Spoken communication relies on prompts and cues; responses are hesitant, repetitive and formulaic but relevant to the context. Some non verbal features are used.

6 (Distinction) 75 - 84

Demonstrated evidence of advanced achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: A range of vocabulary and grammar is used effectively with some errors. Selected cohesive devices are used to connect familiar thoughts and ideas. Resister is usually appropriate to the situation. Pronunciation, intonation, rhythm and stress are acceptable to a background speaker. Ideas, information and meaning are usually communicated clearly, although errors may occur in complex language. Conversation is generally sustained. Spoken communication demonstrates flexibility when using familiar language; responses are relevant to the context, although they may be hesitant. Some appropriate pause fillers and nonverbal feature are used.

7 (High Distinction) 85 - 100

Demonstrated evidence of exceptional achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: A wide range of vocabulary and grammar is used effectively with few errors. A range of cohesive device is used to express connected thoughts and ideas. Resister is appropriate to the situation. Pronunciation, intonation, rhythm and stress are acceptable to a background speaker. Ideas, information and meaning are communicated clearly and effectively, although some errors may occur in complex language. Conversation is initiated and sustained. Spoken communication demonstrates flexibility coherence, spontaneity and relevance to the context. Appropriate pause fillers and nonverbal features are used where required.
