An intermediate course in the ancient Latin language, following on from LATN1110. The course teaches further Latin grammar and gives an introduction to the reading of several Latin authors.
NOTE: Instruction by small group teaching.

LATN2120 continues the study of the grammar and syntax of Classical Latin. The course places emphasis on learning through reading.ᅠIt is designed for students who have successfully completed LATN1110 or an equivalent course.ᅠThere are 4 hours instruction per week and regular attendance is expected.

Although classes are recorded, delayed viewing has not been activated for this course because it has an in-class, in person, mid-semester exam, and person attendance becomes more important as the complexity of the grammar increases. If you have a genuine timetable clash but can attend the mid-semester exam, please contact Dr McWilliam to discuss. We can enrol you in the course manually. Microsoft Teams will also be used to facilitate communication and discussion

Classes are scheduled for Wednesday 10am-12pm AND Friday 12-2pm in Building 67 Room 348. Please confirm class venues before your first class.

Courses are taught in Blended Mode rather than in lecture/tutorial format, so in each 2 hour block, students will do different combinations of grammar and interactive exercises, reading and parsing to reinforce weekly and cumulative grammar and vocabulary.



Aims and outcomes

In second semester Latin, students will read the concluding section of Plautus' Amphitruo and a selection of Cicero's prosecution speeches against Verres, the former governor of the Roman province of Sicily.

By the end of the semester you should be able to:

  • read and analyse extracts in the Course Text Reader for LATN2120 (available from Print on Demand) as specified by your lecturer
  • demonstrate, by means of exercises, assignments and exams, an understanding of the morphology and syntax of the accompanying Grammar and Learning Vocabulary in the Grammar Book, available from Print on Demand, as specified by your lecturer, and
  • continue to reinforce the grammar, morphology and vocab learnt in LATN1110.

Task description

REQUIREMENTS: There are five (5) Assignments in total, designed to increase your skills in translation into English and/or Latin, comprehension, vocab recognition, parsing, grammar and syntax analysis.

  • All five (5) Assignments must be completed (with genuine attempts for ALL questions as instructed) in order to obtain a passing grade for the course
  • Uploading a document without answer(s) does not constitute a genuine submission.
  • Each Assignment is worth 30%. Your final mark will be calculated from the sum of these five assignments divided by 5.
  • Assignments must be submitted typed and in word format via Blackboard by the due time and date.


Assignments, as an assessment task, are designed to build and evaluate a student’s abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students who use AI risk not being prepared for the mid-semester and final exams. Students who use Machine Translation and/or AI to complete assessment or unapproved learning tasks will also fail to meet the core learning outcomes for the course and may also be referred for academic misconduct. Students who fabricate or misrepresent their work will receive an automatic maximum grade 2 for this assessment, regardless of the performance in other criteria.

UQ EXTEND QUIZZES

Requirements:

There are 324 quizzes in total. Students must make 3 proper attempts for each quiz for every section of the course from 2D to 4Ei to reach a total of 972.

Completion:

  • If you choose this option, you must begin in Week 1 of semester in order to complete the required number of quizzes by the due date (Sunday November 9th 9pm)
  • Proper attempts must be made for each question (e.g. a genuine answer must be entered for every question).
  • However, students are not required to get all answers correct to receive the full 15%. The purpose of this assessment task is to make learning vocab meaning, conjugation & declension patterns etc part of your automatic recall/memory.


Quizzes will build skills in:

  • declining nouns, adjectives, and pronouns
  • conjugating verbs in different tenses
  • identifying principal parts of verbs
  • matching nouns and adjectives
  • vocab meaning

This assessment task evaluates a student’s abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of both AI technologies and translation software such as Google Translate to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.


BLACKBOARD TIMED TESTS

Requirements:

  • Students choosing this option must complete two (2) timed Blackboard Tests (10 mins each)
  • Each test will be converted to a mark out out 7.5 and the two marks added together.

The respective tests will be made available in conjunction with the mid-semester and final exams . Further details will be made available on blackboard.

Blackboard Timed tests will give you feedback on your recall of:

  • noun declensions
  • adjective/pronoun declensions
  • noun/adjective/pronoun/participle matching
  • verb conjugations
  • person and number, verb principal parts, mood tense and voice
  • vocab meaning
  • translation of short phrases

Please prepare for these tests by completing some of the UQ Extend quizzes, Blackboard In Class Tests, revising by handwriting, with flashcards, learning vocabulary etc.

The mid-semester exam will consist of a variety of translation, parsing, and grammatical questions based on Sections 2D-3D of the Text and the Grammar Book from POD, plus accumulated knowledge from LATN1110. The assignment will test your ability to:

  • translate the set texts taken from Sections 2D-3D into good readable English demonstrating that you understand the Latin
  • translate unseen sentences and/or passages from Latin into idiomatic English based on learning vocabulary from Semester 1 in LATN1110 and Sections 2D-3D covered in LATN2120.
  • translate sentences from English into Latin based on the learning vocabulary as above
  • to parse and to identify grammatical constructions and other syntax accurately via questions and exercises

  • parse words and phrases, identify grammatical constructions and other syntax accurately in the texts set for translation and in other questions

2 (Fail) 25 - 44

Minimal evidence of achievement of course learning outcomes.

Course grade description: Grade 2, Fail (25-44%),is generally awarded to work that exhibits deficiencies in understanding and applying the fundamental concepts of the course and field of study, and as such, does not satisfy the basic requirements of the course. Often, one or more major items of assessment will not have been completed. Work submitted will demonstrate a partial, faulty or clearly deficient level of vocabulary, an inability to translate seen Latin passages covered in class and/or unseen sentences and/or passages made up from the learning vocabulary into readable, idiomatic English, and an inability to parse words or to recognize and explain grammatical and syntactical Latin constructions.

3 (Marginal Fail) 45 - 49

Demonstrated evidence of developing achievement of course learning outcomes

Course grade description: Grade 3, Marginal Fail (45-49%), is generally awarded if a student has submitted work that attempts to meet the knowledge and skill requirements of the course, but is only able to demonstrate a superficial understanding of the fundamental concepts of the course. Students will usually have attempted all major pieces of assessment and show that they have an identifiable, emerging ability to apply basic knowledge and skills. Work submitted will demonstrate a superficial knowledge of vocabulary, a basic but flawed ability to translate seen Latin passages covered in class and unseen sentences and/or passages made up from the learning vocabulary into English, and a flawed but emerging ability to parse words and to recognize and explain grammatical and syntactical Latin constructions.

Course grade description: Grade 4, Pass (50-64%)is generally awarded where all major items of assessment have been submitted. An adequate knowledge of the fundamental concepts of the course and field of study should be demonstrated and a functional skill level achieved. Course grade description: Grade 7, High Distinction (85-100%), is generally awarded where all items of assessment have been completed and there is evidence that the deeper and more complex aspects of the course and field of study have been mastered. Work submitted will demonstrate an exceptional knowledge of vocabulary and an excellent ability to translate seen Latin passages covered in class and unseen sentences and/or passages made up from the learning vocabulary into readable, idiomatic English, and an excellent ability to parse words and to recognize and explain grammatical and syntactical Latin constructions.

The assessment in LATN2120 is designed to test your progressive acquisition of Latin language through asking questions and translating in class, and via homework assignments, quizzes/ tests, and in-person exams. This includes readings and translation from Latin into idiomatic English, parsing (analysis) of Latin words in context, understanding more complex Latin sentences as exemplified particularly in Sections 2D-4E(i), and showing your increasing knowledge of the grammar, grammatical constructions, syntax and vocabulary covered in these sections and in the material covered in LATN1110. please ensure that you download the vocab pdf at the beginning of semester and refer to it weekly.

All assessment tasks evaluate student’s abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Skill Building: Translation, Parsing and Grammar Assignments

PLEASE NOTE THAT A GENUINE ATTEMPT MUST BE MADE FOR EACH QUESTION:

Your performance in the Take Home Assignments will be assessed according to the following criteria:

  1. Your ability to translate from Latin into idiomatic English texts covered in class;
  2. Your ability to parse words from the learning vocabulary in the readings and in questions on the assignment paper;
  3. Your ability to recognize and explain grammatical and syntactical Latin constructions;
  4. Your ability to translate sentences made up with words from the leaning vocabulary using the grammar and syntax learnt to date into readable, idiomatic English.
  5. The depth of thought expressed in reflecting on the feedback you have received and the strategies you believe will help you either to improve or to maintain your current level if you received an excellent mark

 

To achieve a grade of 7 (High Distinction, 85-100%), your Take-Home Assignments should demonstrate that you have an exceptional knowledge of vocabulary and an excellent ability to translate seen Latin passages covered in class and unseen sentences and passages made up from the learning vocabulary into readable, idiomatic English, and an excellent ability to parse words and to recognize and explain grammatical and syntactical Latin constructions. Your reflection on your feedback will demonstrate that you have read the feedback very carefully and thought very deeply about how to apply it in the future.

LATIN Skill Building: Vocab, Grammar and Accidence: Online Quizzes and Blackboard Timed Tests

your quiz/timed Blackboard test assessment tasks will be assessed according to the following criteria:

1.    Ability to produce a succinct response to a directed question.

  1. Knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and syntax.
  2. Ability to employ relevant terminology.
  3. Ability to translate correctly into English demonstrating that you understand the Latin.


 Unlike formative assessment undertaken during your course (such as book reviews and essays), quiz answers are typically marked on right or wrong basis for multiple choice, single word and short answer questions. The overall grade achieved for a quiz is arrived at by totalling the marks for its constituent elements.

Failing Criteria and Academic Misconduct

To achieve a grade of 7 (High Distinction, 85-100%), your Mid-semester Exam should demonstrate that you have an exceptional knowledge of vocabulary and an excellent ability to translate seen Latin passages covered in class and unseen sentences made up from the learning vocabulary into readable, idiomatic English, and an excellent ability to parse words and to recognize and explain grammatical and syntactical Latin constructions.

To achieve a grade of 6 (Distinction, 75-84%), your Mid-semester Exam should demonstrate that you have an excellent knowledge of vocabulary and a very good ability to translate seen Latin passages covered in class and unseen sentences made up from the learning vocabulary into readable, idiomatic English, and a very good ability to parse words and to recognize and explain grammatical and syntactical Latin constructions.

  • Supplementary assessment for this course will be in the form of the final exam only. Students must apply as instructed https://my.uq.edu.au/information-and-services/manage-my-program/exams-and-assessment/ and be available during the University’s Deferred and Supplementary examination period.
  • Failure to submit all major assessment items (those worth 15% and above) will result in a maximum grade of 2 (Fail).
  • By submitting work through Turnitin you are deemed to have accepted the following declaration: ‘I certify that this assignment is my own work and has not been submitted, either previously or concurrently, in whole or in part, to this University or any other educational institution, for marking or assessment’.
