Centres around comparison of word structure in a wide variety of the world's languages.
NOTE: Course offering may be cancelled unless a minimum of 20 students enrol.

This course is primarily concerned with morphological analysis and developing an understanding of how languages vary with respect to what information a word encodes. We also study classical linguistic typology, including both morphological and word order typology.

[Subject to staffing issues, this course is normally offered in Semester 2 each year.ᅠ However, minor adjustments to the Lecture Program and Booklist may occur from one offering to the next.]

Timetable

The timetable for this course is available on the UQ Public Timetable.

Additional timetable information

Public holidays:

Alternative arrangements for affected students will be announced through the Blackboard site.

Class allocation:

In order to optimise the student experience, it may be necessary to reallocate students to a different class from their first choice.

Before this happens, every effort will be made to enable students to voluntarily change into an alternative class that is suitable.

Please note: Teaching staff do not have access to the timetabling system to help with class allocation. Therefore, should you need

help with your timetable and/or allocation of classes, please ensure you email hass.mytimetable@uq.edu.au from your UQ

student email account with the following details:

  • Full name,
  • Student ID, and
  • the Course Code

Additional information and support can be found here.

Aims and outcomes

This course deals with the internal structure of words, and with the arrangement of languages into classes based on properties of words. We will discuss how words are formed and what kind of information can be encoded in a word. Students will learn to analyse words from familiar and unfamiliar languages, and to think about the role of word structure in the broader grammatical system of the language.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

LO1.

perform systematic morphological analysis on data sets from any language or groups of languages, including morphophonological analysis

LO2.

systematically compare and contrast word structures within and across languages

LO3.

identify and characterise constructions and properties that provide challenges for contemporary theories

LO4.

compare and contrast competing analyses of the same data or constructions

LO5.

identify similarities across apparently disparate languages

LO6.

understand the basic enterprise of linguistic typology and how it relates to other fields of linguistics

Task description

Worksheets will be based on work covered in lectures and/or tutorials but will often require an extension of the analyses presented in class. These are an opportunity to engage in analysis, not to simply regurgitate information learned in class or from readings.

Statement on Generative AI & MT

This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT). Students are advised that the use of AI or MT technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Task description

Students are awarded a mark for presenting a profile of an agreed language during class and submitting a slide to accompany that presentation.

Each week, in class, students volunteer to present a profile of a language the following week. The choice of languages will be given by the instructor. The presentation will be 3-5 minutes and should follow the format specified in the assessment brief (in Blackboard). Students will need to email the instructor a slide or 1 page PDF the day before their presentation. The mark is awarded on the basis of adherence to the brief.

  • Presentation of 3-5 minutes in class.
Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

The maximum extension allowed is 28 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

If an extension is required, the presentation will happen in the next possible class. Towards the end of semester, maximum possible extensions may need to be shorter than 28 days as this task has been designed to be delivered in class.

Late submission

You will receive a mark of 0 if this assessment is submitted late.

Students are required to present at the agreed-upon class.

Task description

The final piece of assessment will be a long take-home assignment, covering the material from the entirety of the course: all of the lectures AND tutorials. It must be uploaded to TurnItIn via the link on the course Blackboard site by the due date and time. It will be composed of multiple short-answer questions, similar to those on the worksheets. It is open book, meaning you should feel free to use notes, books, the library, or the internet (except for e-mail) to complete the assignment. The only restriction is that you do not contact any other person (in person, by phone, fax, e-mail, smoke signal, etcetera) regarding material relating to any aspect of the course. You can contact the course instructor if you have any questions.
