This course provides an introduction to the fundamental concepts of Business Management. It examines the business life cycle and covers a broad range of business management concepts and business operations that contribute to the success of businesses large and small.
The requirement for Business Management knowledge and skills in the modern world is not confined to big corporate business. It has value for sole traders, private companies, government agencies, and non-government agencies alike and includes not-for-profit organisations. Business Management knowledge and skills in these organisations are of value whatever type of stakeholder you might be including an entrepreneur, business owner, shareholder, manager, or employee. The content you will explore, learn, and apply during this course will assist you in solving business problems in a modern world and provide an insight into areas of business which some students may consider pursuing in their future studies, such as human resources supply chain management and marketing.ᅠ

Aims and outcomes
This course aims to introduce students to the varied subject areas that fall under the discipline umbrella of ‘business management’. In doing so, students will explore a range of concepts and factors which influence the performance of an organisation and the people within it.
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
LO1.
Analyse the impact of change on a business for the purpose of creating solutions to case study problems.
LO2.
Develop a business plan that demonstrates a basic evaluation of business organisations used for solving basic business problems.
LO3.
Evaluate business performance by using a SWOT analysis of business data and information to identify effectiveness and efficiencies.
LO4.
Compare and contrast business organisations for the purpose of solving organisational problems.
LO5.
Categorise the different roles and functions management performs within the organisational structure for the purpose of creating an organisational chart and job descriptions for key personnel within the context of a business plan.

Task description
During class time, students will be provided with two case studies which discuss the circumstances experienced by two businesses. Based on the case studies, students will be required to answer a series of short-answer questions to illustrate their understanding of course content and their analytical and problem solving ability. This task allows the use of the course Workbook during the assessment. No other materials are to be used.
