This course provides an introduction to the fundamental principles of managing business organisations including key management concepts, models and contexts. The course covers the functions of management, strategic frameworks and responsible management.
This course is designed to provide an introduction to the fundamental principles of managing business organisations. It will allow for the critical exploration of management concepts, models and contexts using a team-based approach. While working in teams, students will learn how to apply management theory and research evidence in analysing and creatively solving real-life management problems. Students will also learn how to critically and ethically evaluate managerial decisions while considering the organisation's context in a culturally diverse and internationalised world. The unit draws upon a range of academic, practical and pop cultural sources to engage students in authentic ways of learning about management.

Bachelor of Business Management (BBusMan) students are highly recommended to take MGTS1301 in their first semester of study alongside MGTS1601, ACCT1101 and ECON1011.

The aim of this course is that you have a good overview of the management discipline and you will have acquired some of the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to become a more effective manager.

Task description
Working in teams during tutorials, you will discuss different case studies across the semester. You will discuss the case in class and develop an answer as a team.
The best three (3) marks out of five (5) will be taken in consideration for your final grade in this assessment.
Members of the group will be required to submit a Peer Assessment of the other members of the group. Peer Assessment results may be used to adjust students' individual group assignment results.
This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Assessment will be submitted via Blackboard.
Deferral or extension
You cannot defer or apply for an extension for this assessment.
Late submission
A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.

Task description
You will research news articles to identify a management problem.
You will then research the scholarly management literature related to your chosen problem.
In your written assignment you will apply the insights you found in the scholarly literature and make recommendations about the management problem you identified.
This task has been designed to be challenging, authentic and complex. Whilst students may use AI technologies, successful completion of assessment in this course will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance.
A failure to reference generative AI use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
To pass this assessment, students will be required to demonstrate detailed comprehension of their written submission independent of AI tools.
Submission guidelines
Submit the assignment through the Online Submission folder in the Assessment section of the course Blackboard site.
Ensure you receive a Turnitin submission ID and retain this number as proof of submission. If you do not receive proof of submission, you should regard your submission as unsuccessful and take steps to address the issue. It is your responsibility to ensure the assignment has been successfully submitted. Any requests to waive the late submission penalty without proof of submission will not be considered under any circumstances.
