This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of three interrelated aspects of managing in the global workplace. Theme 1: General human resource management (HRM) in the multinational enterprise. Theme 2: Engaging in and supporting global mobility. Theme 3: Building awareness of present and emerging international human resource management trends. The course places equal value on building students' understanding of the theoretical foundations and practical implications of working in a global HRM environment.

Welcome to MGTS3606. This 3-hour seminar is design to help students understand and engage with human resource and global talent management principles. Today, the need to manage individuals who are living and working abroad due to company-assigned relocations or self-initiated moves is unprecedented. The multinational enterprise however struggles to keep its policies and practices updated and relevant to serve the ever-changing needs of a globally mobile workforce. This courses challenges students to think critically about managing human resources and talent, and does so entirely through a global lens.

During this course, you will be exposed to a variety of issues that arise in the global workplace and which you will encounter upon graduating from UQ. There are three key themes explored:

Theme 1: "General human resource management (HRM) in the multinational enterprise" examines what makes managing staff across national borders different to managing staff at home. It considers in some depth the key HRM functions that require attention in the multinational enterprise.

Theme 2: "Engaging in and supporting global mobility” scrutinizes current practices of international assignments and assignment standards for staff and their families and considers proactive ways to overcome global mobility complexities and challenges.

Theme 3 "Building awareness of emerging international human resource management trends” sets Themes 1 and 2 in the context of today whereby future trends in the global workplace are framed by projections of the HRM evolution.
